VM backup some (not all) of the linux mount points

Thread needs solution

Hi, we use Acronis Appliance for Vmware to backup agentless VMs. We also have "Back up mount point targets" set to "No". However, we do have some Linux VM that we need to backup some of the mount point but not all. How can I do that without installing local acronis agent? Will Acronis back them up if I create "hard link directory" to point to these mount point?

Regards,

Aldous

Hi Aldous,

The general rule is the following: if hypervisor-level snapshot includes the data from mount points, then it will be backed up - there is a strict dependency on hypervisor capabilities. Normally external mount points are not affected by hypervisor snapshots (like external iSCSI LUNs connected inside guest OS), so the only option to back it up is via agent for Windows/Linux installed inside such VMs.

P.S. The "Backup mount point targets" option is not applicable to agent-less VM backup therefore.

Thank you.

Thanks Vasily. So, which agent should I install to the guest OS? (Agent for Windows/Linus or Agent for Vmware)?

If I use agent within Guest OS, will I still be able to mount the Backup as VM and restore to VM? I understand that I can't restore to VM or mount as VM when we do our XEN VM backup because they are using local agent and I must restore as physical box (i meant full system restore)

You should install the agent which corresponds the particular guest OS, which should be Agent for Linux in your case (if I correctly understood). The backups produced by this agent can be used to perform Run VM from backup and restore as VM operations - these recoveries can be done by Agent for VMware (appliance or Windows - doesn't matter) or Agent for Hyper-V - depending on which hypervisor you use.

Example: you have a vSphere environment with 1 ESXi host and 1 VM with Linux guest OS. You should install Agent for VMware (deploy appliance or install Agent for VMware (Windows) somewhere) and connect it to the ESXi host. Next install Agent for Linux inside the Linux VM and capture backups normally. When needed you can browse these backups by Agent for VMware (using "Backups" tab) and perform Run VM and recover to VM operations.

Thank you.
