ABR11 Cannot restore win2008 gpt to wmware workstation

Thread needs solution

I have a server IBM X3650 M2 with 3 discs configurated in raid 5 mode. The server has UEFI support. On this server windows server standard 2008 SP2 64 bit (Build 6002) is installed. The disc is configurated as base disc in GPT format with 3 partitions: the first "EFI system partition", the second "Unit C boot system primary partition", the third "Unit E primary partition".
I installed ABR11 with universal restore (build 17217).
I tried to make the backup of the whole disc with post conversion in wmware workstation format. The backup and the post coversion have beed completed successfully, but the resulting virtual machine does not startup in wmware workstation 7.0 with boot error "mbr error 1" and "mbr error 2".
As per ABR11 user manual the resulting virtual machine should always have the disc in SCSI interface and base volumes in MBR, but the virtual machine created has IDE interface and the virtual disc is in GPT format again.
Is it a bug of ABR11?

Hi Fabio

This is most probably an issue with the restore phase. I think in this case ABR11 is detect the host server supporting EUFI and restoring the image into VMWare with UEFI support.

As you might already know VMware Workstation does not support UEFI and only works in a BIOS mode and it more than likely the reason why the OS is not booting at the moment.

The ABR11 manual lists some good details on EUFI and what OS’s can be converted and which OS’s don’t support EUFI boot mode: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#12540.html

As you also mentioned ABR11 now has some special abilities to convert a BIOS system into an UEFI system and vice versa (if the host OS supports EFUI mode of cause).

What I would recommend trying is creating the VMWare workstation VM then booting the ABR11 Linux based boot CD and performing the recovery from inside the VM... The Boot CD will automatically detect the OS loaded is in BIOS mode and perform the required conversion from EUFI to BIOS and should get you up and running!

Please let us know how you go.
