ABR11 stuck on "Connecting to localhost" after hibernate or sleep
I have ABR 11 (Build 11.0.17318) on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 (with full Windows Update enabled).
The problem I have is that, once my PC has hibernated or slept and then resumed, the scheduled backup plan tasks get stuck on "Task 'Weekly backup' [or 'Daily...' or 'Monthly...'] is running. The current progress is 0%". Similarly, in such a situation, if I go into ABR11 client and select "Local Machine" or "Manage this machine", it gets stuck on "Operation Progress" "Connecting to localhost...".
I have full Windows Event Logging enabled for Acronis but there is no event log mentioning why it can't connect. The last 3 events (in descending date/time order are listed at the bottom of this post but note that it seems to have started 2 monthly backups and 1 weekly backup within 3 secs of each other (though this would be the first monthly/weekly backup for a new plan.
I have only recently updated to ABR11 from ABR10 after experiencing the same issue in ABR10...and this only arose after I set up my PC for Remote Desktop connection (which I need). I do know that, if I reboot my PC, ABR11 connects perfectly fine and scheduled plans trigger and complete successfully...but only until my PC goes to sleep/hibernates.
When I set up Remote Desktop connection, I:
- Changed my LAN NIC config in the "Power Management" tab to "Allow this device to wake the computer" (enabled) and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer" (enabled). Do note though that this problem occurs even when I manually resume my PC from sleep/hibernate (using power button) rather than using WOL (Wake On LAN)...though I dare say that it probably also happens using WOL too.
- I also set Group Policy settings according to http://www.techrepublic.com/article/connect-securely-to-windows-vista-r… too (yes, I know the instructions are for Vista but they also apply to Win7)...though I didn't enable FIPS (will want to again soon but had to upgrade some software that uses MD5 hashes [which aren't FIPS-compliant]).
I do remember way-back-when that the WOL NIC settings would cause the same problems, I think with ATI (True Image) but have searched in vain for the articles. But I would have thought that this would have been resolved by now.
Of course, there could be another underlying problem.
FYI I also totally uninstalled and reinstalled ABR11 but get the same problem...and I also recreated the backup plans, creating brand new archives.
Any help in resolving this would be appreciated...as I really don't want to have to reboot my PC every day to get it to complete my daily backups.

Hi Colin,
Using AppWiz.cpl, I only have Windows Live Sync and Appigo Sync installed. No mention of Microsoft Sync, though I dare say that Windows Live Sync may be pretty related.
The thing is that no other apps have been installed except the upgrade to Acronis and changing my NIC/Group Policy settings for Wake On Lan (WOL). So, before these changes, any Sync product was working fine with ABR10 even after sleep/hibernate.

Robin,
yes I was referring to Windows Live Sync, just couldn't think of the W7 name versus the XP one. I have noticed that sync on my system misbehaves if coming out of sleep or hibernation, and has sometimes blocks network access for a short period and wondered if this might be a contributing cause to your problem.
What might be an idea is to re-install ABR11 MMS only. run the installer and try repair, if that doesn't work, then next tinme around select Modify and then tick all the components that you have installed and it will re-install the complete set. Alternatively if you have unpacked all the MSI installers just run the MMS module installer.
Make sure you reboot after any of these as management services are stopped and not properly restarted,

Hi Colin,
Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been trying out different scenarios and also have to wait for my schedules to trigger after a hibernate.
Anyhow, I have uninstalled MS Live Synch but still get the problem with schedules not triggering after sleep. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled but still get the same problem too. I have also disabled the WOL feature on my NIC card but problem still persists.
However I did notice that, when uninstalling, it didn't seem to uninstall it all e.g. it left behind "AMS User", "ANS User" and also seemed to know where my personal vault & backup plans were (although, yes, I didn't want them deleted but it should at least have not known where to find them on a reinstall). So I am now looking for the real, full uninstall procedure on the forum and reinstall again.
I will let you know how I get on but, if you have any more ideas or guidance in the interim, I would be grateful.

Nah, did a full reinstall (uninstall->reboot->Acronis Cleanup Utility + delete Acronis users from user accounts->reboot->installing all Acronis except Agent->reboot->installing Agent) but still get the same problem of Acronis not getting past the following Event when triggering post-hibernate:
Error code: 1284
Task 'Daily backup' changed its state from 'idle' to 'running'.
Absolutely nothing is reported after that. Going into the client UI and trying to "Manage this machine" still comes up with "Connecting to Localhost" ad infinitum. This is starting to get me down. When I code stuff, I ensure that anything interacting with another program/system has full diagnostics when opening the connection (or at least some sort of timeout).
Hold on...am going through Security Log which looks a bit bloated...

You could try changing the MMS user to yourself rather than acronis User#x. However, if you then want to return to using Acronis User you might have to reinstall again as you won't have access to the ABR11 produced password.

It's not necessary. In this case just change 'acronis agent' user password to whatever you want, and type it in services properties 'logon' tab. Password of autogenerated user is not saved anywhere else during installation.

Thanks, Colin B & dev-anon. I don't know why I didn't think or try that, but why would that mean that the AMS User can't manage it? The AMS User has the same privileges as my logon except for full Administrator rights (and would I want it to have those rights)?

...and wouldn't it also mean that I would need to change the "Log On As" user for Acronis Management Server Service and Acronis Web Server Service too which also both use AMS User? If not, wouldn't that just mean that I am pushing this problem further downstream?

Robin,
If you temporarily disable Remote Access does ABR11 start working properly again after sleep?
Did you find anything of interest in the Security Log?
I think that so long as AMS User is part of the Backup Group its dependents will also work. The reason it sets up its own user logon is so that tasks can run without the main PC user being logged in when in a multiuser environment. I believe it also allows access to some low level Windows inner workings such as NTAuthority which a normal user Admin or not can't use without some not advised tinkering whith their system.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for following up & for clarifying the use of AMS User.
I haven't done a full analysis of the Event log yet (was away for the holiday weekend) but there was certainly a lot of Security events starting when the scheduler kicked in. I did notice that quite a few of them were IPv6 but, as I don't actually use IPv6, decided to turn that off as a NIC card property.
I have also had remote access turned off for a little while now, just until I can get ABR11 working correctly again.
Since doing both of the above (and changing and doing a Repair install, my Managed Machine Service is showing as Unavailable after the PC has gone into hibernate. If I get some time later today, I might do a full event log analysis and maybe another full uninstall, cleanup & reinstall.
The thing that is always frustrating is that ABR11 runs perfectly OK if the PC hasn't gone into hibernate. Hopefully the event log analysis will reveal what is happening. The trouble with that analysis is filtering just for Acronis events.
I will keep you updated as to how I get on. And I bet you it is something oh so simple (as usual) that is stopping it from working after hibernate.

Well, after almost a year of living with Acronis only being able to be used on first bootup (i.e. it wouldn't work after a hibernate or sleep), I plucked up the courage a couple of weeks ago to try it again...and got it working!! This is what I did:
- Disconnected from the net (after downloading the latest version of Acronis).
- Totally disabled Norton Internet Security (AntiVirus, AntiSpam, everything).
- Uninstalled all of Acronis (this included Personal Vaults but, funnily enough, I was able to keep my backup plans - which I had thought might have been corrupted in some way).
- Reinstalled the latest version of Acronis.
- Enabled Norton Internet Security (AntiVirus, AntiSpam, everything).
- Reconnected to the net.
- Specified a new Personal Vault.
Since then, everything seems to be working OK. Backup plan schedules kick in correctly, whether on first boot or after hibernate. I'm glad to have my Acronis back...but somewhat disappointed that there is no check for Norton Internet Security etc in the install wizard to prevent this grief I have had (assuming it was down to this).
