Acronis Backup and Restore causing NTBACKUP to fail, (possible VSS issues)

Thread needs solution

Hello, I recently bought Acronis Backup and restore V10 (which also came with the deduplication software free).

I installed it on our server (Windows small business server 2003 32 bit).

After installing (and I hadn't run any backups from Acronis backup and restore at all yet) it caused our normal overnight NBACKUP job to fail.

I got in touch with one of the support people online who after a lengthy discussion suggested uninstaling and see if my NTBACKUP worked again, which it did.
since then i have heard nothing, although I have emailed repeatedly asking for further information.

Now I would like to be able to acronis backup and restore without killing our normal NTBACKUP.

I did some searching on this forum and found a post as below in the quote:

Now it was quite an old post, from October 2009, so I'm not too keen on trying that out, but I would like to know if there is a solution, or if this quoted solution is still valid.

Looking at my backup logs, I can see it's related to a VSS service that's causing an issue.
I have read some fairly old posts that suggests various things, but can't find any newer information abou this, but would like to get this problem resolved ASAP, as I'd like to start using the software we paid for.

Hello all,
Thank you for posting, I will be happy to help. Please accept our apologies for the delay with the response.

To resolve the encountered issue please perform the below steps:

1) Please make sure that you are using the latest build of Acronis backup & Recovery 10 #11345. If not, pleased download and install it. You can learn more on how to download the latest build in this article.

2) After that please download, unpack and install SnapAPI Build 512.

After the installation of SnapAPI Build 512 you will be asked to reboot the machine. You can either reboot the machine, or ignore the message and restart the Acronis Managed Machine Service by doing the following:

- Hit Start-Run and type in services.msc;

- Right-click on the Acronis Managed Machine Service and select Restart.

See if the issue remains.

You can also enable Microsoft native VSS instead of the default Acronis VSS. Instructions on how to do it are available in this article.

Please let us know the results, we should be sure that the program runs flawlessly. If the provided information is not clear or if you have any other question do not hesitate to post them and we will be glad to answer.
Thank you.

I suspect it's related to this thread:

I can email some logs to someone (acronis support person) if they want, but I don't want to post our server details on here of course.

Hello andras Furness,

Thank you very much for your post. I will definitely help you with this.

It is very likely, that Acronis VSS provider is conflicting with Microsoft VSS and causes the latter to stop working properly.

To get to the bottom of this, please request that your support case gets escalated to our Expert team. We will be able to resolve this for you.

As a workaround I can recommend the following:

1. Extract the Agent for Windows component and install it from the command line this way:

msiexec /i AcronisAgentWindows.msi VSS_PROVIDER_DISABLED=1

It will be installed without the Acronis VSS provider. After that, please refer to this article in our Knowledge Base, to enable Microsoft VSS.

This way you will be able to use Ntbackup and our software with Volume Shadow Copy option enabled.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you.

Thanks for replying, I'll try that.

I have sent an email asking for the case to be sent to the expert team, but they are not very good at getting back to me, so I hope they actually do that.
The last person I was in contact with was Jitesh Swami (Ref Id "ref:00D3Zcb.50058c9uY:ref " .
Previous to that it was Gurwant Kaler(Ref Id "ref:00D3Zcb.50058c9uY:ref") .

Neither have replied to my emails to date.

Thank you for getting back to me, andras Furness,

I will contact our Management team to get this case taken care of, I am terribly sorry for all the trouble.

Thank you.

Hello andras Furness,

I have some new information about this issue. While we are waiting for a reply from our Expert team, please try the following solution:

We can try to direct NTbackup to use Microsoft VSS Provider instead of Acronis VSS Provider.

Open the registry - click start->run>type - regedit->and press OK.

Locate and right-click the following registry subkey:

HKey_Local_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore

Point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type UseMicrosoftProvider as the name for the new DWORD value, and then press Enter.

Double-click UseMicrosoftProvider, type 1 in the Value box.

Press Enter, and then close registry and then try Ntbackup to see if that works fine.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you.
