Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server für Windows, Clone (and German)
hello my System is:
Windows Server2003
i have installed an 15-Day Test Version from "Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server für Windows"
is it possible to Clone my System Harddisk during my Windows is running?
my Problem is i cant shut down my System, so i need clone my Disc during running Windows.
I have to Clone my system every Week the target HDD are hot plug and play, if my Master System are broken i can plug in my cloned HDD in my System and boot and work forward.
The clone prozess should not erase my System discs during the clonig, i need a 1:1 Copy, for a fast repairing of my System.
and how i can do that?
German
hallo wie oben bereit etwas schwerfällig erklärt:
System Windows Server 2003

Hello Victor and Popo!
Thank you for opening the thread and many thanks to Popo for his valuable comment.
I'm very sorry for I cannot provide you with assistance in German, but I will do my best to give you the most detailed answer. Let me know should something seem confusing for you, I will be glad to clarify!
You definitely can clone the hard drive with system partition running the software from Windows, but though officially reboot is not required, you may be asked for it since you are cloning the system partition. You will need to turn off the machine then and take off one of the HDDs - it is needed in order to avoid mess with booting (as far as MBR is cloned as well the machine may get confused from which drive to boot and present you BSOD).
Also though we do not expect any issues with cloning the drive from Windows, we usually suggest to use the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media is possible - this helps to avoid messing with running Windows.
Thus you should perform cloning safe and easy. I would also advise you to take a look at the User's Guide chapter 6.11.5.2 for more details.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you!

Hello,
since i´m new to this forum i don´t know if i should open a new thread or if i´m allowed to post a similar question. So if i should open a new thread, please let me know.
I´m interested in a software, which can be used to create offline full image backups to a network drive. Most of the time i have to backup laptops, which might or might not have a floppy disk drive or even a cd / dvd drive. So booting from an USB would be the only solution, i guess. But if this is not possible, i would have to find a way to attach an USB CD/DVD drive for example.
Having that said, i would like to ask my questions, which are as follows:
1) which Boot Media is available for acronis true image (CD/DVD, ...) ?
2) which device drivers are being loaded, so which device can be accessed (network, SAN, ...) ?
3) is it possible to modify the boot media (i.E. add some files to the USB stick) ?
4) which filesystems are being supported (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, Reiser FS, ...) ?
If i understand it correctly it is possible to create an image backup of each single volume on the local machine, regardless of the number of volumes and regardless of the number of drives are being attached (as long as the configuration is supported and working).
Can you please shed some light on this.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Andy

Dear Andreas!
Welcome on Acronis Forum, we are glad that you joined us! Thank you for sharing your concerns with us, I will be glad to assist you!
You can definitely create Bootable Media on the USB drive and use it for imaging the machines.
Should you have all of them connected to network, I would rather suggest you to take a look at the Acronis Snap Deploy 3 for PCs. In this case you will not need to go to some particular machine in order to take an image of it, you will need to:
- Install PXE server
- Configure it to have Master Image Creator
- Force the machine to boot from NIC
Once on rebooting it will get to the PXE server, offering you a choise to boot either into Windows or to the Master Image Creator. Also keep in mind that you can set autostart in any suitable timeframe (for instance, 10 seconds), so that in case during this timeframe no action is performed, the target machine will boot either into Windows or Master Image Creator (you will need to choose it when setting autostart option). You can find more details in chapter 7 in the User's Guide.
Acronis bootable mediacan also be created onto CD, DVD, USB flash drive, diskettes or other media supported by the computer BIOS as a boot device. It will contains all the bootable components of Acronis Snap Deploy 3 like Master Image Creator, Agent and Standalone version. It can access every location available in the network and drives attached to the machine in question. Feel free to check chapter 5 User's Guide for more information.
Should something happen to the machine imaged, you can easily deploy (restore) the image back, configuring PXE to contain bootable Agent and booting the computer into this Agent (won't require any installation onto the target machine). Please also note that according to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer your are going to deploy.
Should you decide that you need Backup and Recovery solution, I'd suggest you to use Acronis Backup and Recovery Workstation Standalone.
It's bootable media can be also created onto CD, DVD, USB and PXE media and supports all available locations in the network and locally attached media.
Acronis Snap Deploy provides full-featured imaging and deployment of the following file systems:
- FAT16/32
- NTFS
- Ext2/Ext3
- ReiserFS
- Reiser4
- Linux SWAP
- XFS
- JFS
Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 can back up and recover the following file systems with the following limitations:
• FAT16/32
• NTFS
• Ext2/Ext3
• ReiserFS3 - particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Storage Node
• ReiserFS4 - volume recovery without the volume resize capability; particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Storage Node
• XFS - volume recovery without the volume resize capability; particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Storage Node
• JFS - particular files cannot be recovered from disk backups located on Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Storage Node
• Linux SWAP
Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 can back up and recover corrupted or non-supported file systems using the sector-by-sector approach.
You can find find more details regaridng the product funcionality in the User's Guide. Please keep in mind that according to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer your are going to backup or restore.
I would also be glad to provide you with the detailed information regarding modifying the USB disk, but I'd like to be sure in the scenario you would like to perform. Could you please kindly specify it to me?
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!
Thank you!

Hello Yana,
thanks for your quick reply.
What i try to accomplish is as follows:
I want to backup several different type of machines. Different in this case means that these machine have different network adapters.
The major part of these machine are laptop, so i can take them with me. There are approx 4 to 5 different type of machines
The next thing is that i´m must not install any additional software, therefor i have to do an offline backup.
I don´t want to install any additional server software, because i don´t need any schedule functions.
I just want to share a network drive on my server and use this shared drive to store the images.
So, having 1 USB stick with all required network drivers for all 5 different types of hardware would be my preferred solution.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Andy

Dear Andreas!
Thank you for specifying the details of your scenario!
In this case you can use either Snap Deploy or Acronis Backup and Recovery.. Its bootable media supports different types and models of various hardware, so it should suit your needs, since the Bootable Media can be created on to the USB stick. I would also advise you to take a look at the instructions of Bootable Media USB stick creation.
Please also keep in mind that according to the licensing policy of Snap Deploy you need 1 license per 1 machine you are going to restore, and meanwhile licensing policy of Acronis Backup and Recovery requires 1 license per 1 machine you are going to image or restore.
Let me know in case somethings seems confusing to you - I will be glad to clarify!
Thank you!

Dear Yana,
thanks for the explanation.
While reading your update new questions came to my mind.
o) Whats the minimum size of the USB stick that can be used to boot from and have all files for Acronis Backup and Recovery on it ?
o) Which operating system will be installed and used on the usb stick ?
o) Will the most common nic´s be autodetected ?
o) Is there a tool available from acronis to do an offlince defragmentation of a windows partition ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Andreas

Hello Andreas!
I will be glad to provide you with answers.
- That depends on the number of bootable components of your version that you are going to include. Anyway while creating the media you will be reported regarding how much space is required.
<click on the image to see enlarged version> - Our Bootable Media is Linux Based
- Sure all the common NICs are detected since we are adding all possible drivers to the Bootable Media.
- Unfortunately we do not have a toll for offline defragmentation of the drive, so we'd suggest you to perform it before imaging the drive
Please also keep in mind that according to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer your are going to backup or restore.
Let us know in case you have any additional questions!
Thank you!
