Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced SBS

Thread needs solution

Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 Advanced for Small Business Servers, Build 10.0.11639

Server : SBS 2003 Service Pack 2

Hi Folks,

I am trying hard not to be really disappointed with the product. Its not easy. Before finally giving up on it I thought I would give the forums a go.

Some background:

I want to use the product to take an image of my server hard drives. There are two hard drives. Drive C: is the normal system hard drive and Drive D: contains the company data. I have attached a 500Gbyte USB hard drive as the destination for the images.

I initially installed the software and set up an incremental backup plan. After a few weeks I logged remotely into the server but could see no trace of the desktop shorts cuts. It was as if the software had been un-installed.

I re-installed the software completely. I set up another incremental backup plan to run daily with verification after the backup.

I then realised that if I let the incremental job run daily I would soon run out of space on the destination drive. I was also concerned about what would happen if one of the incremental backups was missed. Would that render the rest of the backup job useless.. I couldnt find the answer to this question anywhere.

I decided that a full backup was needed every day so I set up a full backup job that deleted older backups before running. i.e if a backup already on the destination drive was older than 2 days then delete it before running. This had the effect of leaving two consecutive backup images on my destination drive at any time. I should say that this seems like a poor strategy but because of my uncertainty with the incremental backup I have no choice.

The full backup seemed to run Ok for a while but took a very long time to complete. Actually it never seemed to stop running. There was always a little icon with a red moving arrow being displayed on the tool bar , bottom right. I would love to be able to tell you what size the image was but I have waded through 100's of logs and can find nothing that tells me the size of the image.

I have now noticed that the backup plan hasn't ran in approx 1 month. I have open the acronis interface and selected backup plans and tasks. It now displays no backup plans. I am connected to my backup server. What is going on with this software? Can someone please help and perhaps advise me on what type of backup I need to use to maintain and ongoing daily image of my server. I will be using this image in the event that the server fails. I have a new server on standby that i can put the image onto in the hope that the company can be up and running in a short space of time.

Error messages are typically.. A task with id " xxxxxxxxxxxxx" does not exist.Error code 17, Module 144
code 9437201, (0x900011)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated..

It may be worth mentioning that I also run Symantec Backup Exec as my daily tape backup incase there is some conflict.

Best Regards
Carl

Hi Carl, firstly I would like to welcome you to for forum :-)

I will try to address some of the questions/points you have made above.

First off I would strongly suggest that you upgrade your version of ABR10, it’s a rather old build you have installed and there have been a number of fixes/additions made to the product since this build.

With the software loosing the shortcuts from the desktop I have not seen or heard of this myself, do you know if it’s possible someone could have uninstalled the software perhaps? (The event logs on the server might help find a cause or reason for this?)

If you have an incremental backup job that is missed it will not cause any issues at all with your backup other than the obvious issue of not being able to restore on that particular day the backup was missed. The next incremental backup that runs will simply backup any new/changed data since your last backup was done even if it was a few days, weeks..etc, ABR10 will work it out and there will not be any issues with this.

Out of interest do you rotate or remove that USB drive at all? If not the backup you have setup to be full/incremental along with a retention period should not be an issue, however the newer builds might work allot better for you as there has been some fixes done in this area. If you DO remove the USB drive and it’s not persistent storage to the server I would suggest using the “Simplified naming of backup files” I believe the version of ABR10 you have might not have this feature included though but after an update you will get access to this feature! Some more details can be found at the following location: http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#10483.html

Another option you might like to look into is dropping the “HDD Writing speed” down from 100% (maximum) to say 80% as USB drives can at times cause delays and issues for systems when writing allot of data to them (http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#1290.html)

As it seems you only have 1x backup job on your server it might be best to remove/uninstall your current version of ABR10, run the ABR10 cleanup utility: http://kb.acronis.com/content/6177. The reason for this is as you’ve had a few issues, and only have a single job it makes it rather easy to allow for this and will help ensure you have a fresh/clean start with the later build.

Please let us know how you go and if you have any more questions.
