Bootable Media Updates - Yet Another Acronis Mistake?
There have been several, several, posts about the BR10 and BR11 boot disks not supporting Dell Vostro 260 and Optiplex 390 NICs. Datastor Australia keeps pushing WinPE to overcome this obstacle. Today I sat down and really, really gave WinPE a try.
First problem... right off the bat I get a message about Universal Restore not being an option because there was no Universal Restore license found. Funny... I go in to add/remove programs and it says it is installed. All other problems aside not having Universal Restore is a show stopper in itself.
Second problem... I downloaded the Windows 7 NIC drivers for a Vostro 260 directly from Dell and added the drivers to the WinPE build. Not only did it pick up the Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller but is also picked up some SMC, Zyxel, I/O Data and some D-Link NICs from that same Dell Windows 7 driver. Where did those come from? To cap the experience off I burned the resulting image and no NIC. At least as far as I can tell. There was no place when the CD booted to check NIC drivers or IP addresses.
I am sorry but using WinPE is not an option. What a horrid, horrid nightmare. All because Acronis did away with interim updates of their bootable media. A mistake? Big time. The software is not pretty much a boat anchor.
The only time the NIC or Storage drivers get updated at this point is when there is a new build. In BR10's case that will probably never happen at this point. In BR11's case, if the norm is followed, it will only get updated once ever 6 months until the discontinue it (what? maybe a year and a half if it follows the normal course).
Not acceptable Acronis. Not in the least. Dell (and Realtek) are major players. You need to go back to interim releases of the boot media with updated drivers. By the time you included Vostro and Optiplex drivers in the current boot media Dell will have rolled out yet newer computers with newer NICs and us, your customers, will be caught in an infinite loop of never having boot media that works.....
