BUG: Error while recovering TIB stored on DVD

Thread needs solution

Product: Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Workstation build 11345

I backed up my system volume (C: 5.5GB NTFS) to SYSTEM.TIB and burned it on to a DVD disc.

Then I run Acronis Media Builder and created bootable CD (Acronis Backup & Recovery with Universal Restore).

I have 2nd PC and I want to recover my SYSTEM.TIB to it (using Universal Restore). The first partition on this pc is 20GB NTFS. So I need to resize partition stored in SYSTEM.TIB (5.5 GB --> 20 GB)

I booted from Acronis CD. Then I ejected Acronis CD and inserted DVD disc with SYSTEM.TIB. I clicked "Recovery". Recovery wizard appeared. The setting I entered is:

  • What to recover

Archive:

Path: CD, D:\

Archive: SYSTEM.TIB   Number of backups: 1

Data type: Volumes

Content:

Backup: Created: [...] Size: 2.24 GB Type: Full

Items to recover: System (C:), 5.5 GB

  • Where to recover

Recover "System (C:)" to:

Disk 1 / System (C:)

Size:  Here, when I click "Change..." and try to resize my partition, I get following error message:

Failed to set volume parameters.

Code: 9,764,865 (0x950001)

Message: Invalid parameters were specified

The parameters I specify are 100% correct, so it seems to be a bug in software.

By the way, when I try to recover this SYSTEM.TIB stored on a network resource or on a USB flash drive, everything is OK. The bug seems to happen only when TIB file is stored on DVD disc.

This is not a problem with my PC, DVD disc or drive: I tried on different PCs, discs and drives, on VM and iso images but got the same error.

PLEASE FIX THIS BUG

Hello Pavel,

I'm sorry for the delayed response.

Let me assist you with this situation. As soon as I noticed this case, I have tried to reproduce the same situation with our QA team - we have created the archive and saved in to the DVD, then tried to recover and resize. Both operations were successful.

So it does not appear to be a common issue with the product, but we have to investigate it anyway. Could you please provide us with some detailed information from your system?

Please do the following in order to collect the information:

- Download the file;
- Run the downloaded file
The gathered information will be put in adv_report.zip in the same folder, where the AcronisInfo was saved.
Running AcronisInfo may take up to 5 minutes.

Then submit a request for technical support. Attach all the collected files and information to your request along with the step-by-step description of the actions taken before the issue appears and the link to this thread. Then please provide me with the case number you receive from our system, so I can pick it up and speed up the process. We will do our best to investigate the problem and provide you with a solution.

Additionally to this, you are welcome to ask me any other questions concerning Acronis, and I will assist you further.

Thank you.

Hi,

I'm facing the same problem!

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Server build 11345

The problem is caused by the TIB file being on the DVD.
If I copy the same TIB file from the DVD on a usb stick, the resizing is possible.

When I open the tib file from the DVD, Acronis tells me that its size is 7GB, if I open it from the usb stick acronis automatically resizes it to 18GB. (altering the size afterwards to lets say 15GB is possible too)

Probably Acronis is trying to alter the TIB file on the DVD while trying to resize the partitions for the recovery task, which is impossible since its a DVD.

This is really frustrating.... and as I see it, it IS a common issue with the product at least with this build...

I hope you're going to recognise this as a problem since I'm running out of USB sticks... ;)

Best regards.

D.

I am also facing the same or a related issue. I am using Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Advanced Server with Universal Restore. I tested builds 11345 and 11639 (the latest at the time of this posting) and both exhibit the issue.

My issue occurs in situations where the image to be restored is located on a DVD AND the destination hard disk (being restored to) is smaller than the source hard disk (where the image was backed up from).

If the source and destination disks are identical size, the image loads successfully. If the image is stored on a network location or a USB drive (flash or external HD), the image loads successfully. However, the combination of the smaller destination disk and the image being located on a DVD causes the failure: when choosing where to restore the image to, the destination disk is grayed out and cannot be selected.

This is a severe limitation in environments where the only media available is DVD, so I hope to see a resolution in a future update or a suggested workaround.

Hello David Wagner and David Fritsche,

Thank you very much for your feedback. I will do my best to assist you.

The issue that you are reporting is a possible known problem with our software. I have forwarded this information to our QA department and as soon as they reproduce it, I will provide you with an update for the fix.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hello David Wagner and David Fritsche,

Thank you very much for your patience. I would like to provide you with an update regarding the issue you are experiencing.

At the moment it is not possible to restore from a DVD/DVDs with a resize because of our software's limitation.

It was put in place to prevent constant disk swapping, which will result in confusion. Our program will start asking for disks in random order. This happens due to peculiarities of the restore operation with a consecutive resize. The software needs to access all the files which can be located on different DVDs because of disk fragmentation.

I will definitely create a Customer Listening Ticket for this problem, considering that this feature is useful in environments where the DVD is the only media available.

Should you have any other questions or issues, please let me know.

Thank you.

What did that Customer Listening Ticket do for us??? Can we see it? What is the status?
I dont understand why this is not on the front end of your web site. Not even on 10.0.12703 is the issue resolved... it is now February of 2011, 6 months later from an Acronis rep's reply, and an entire year from the original poster finding the issue. Backing up and recovering from optical media is one of the most widely used, textbooked, and practiced backups, it is a feature you advertise, but it doesnt work! If I dont have online connectivity or my usb hdd has crashed, what good is a backup? Does acronis use their own products, and if so why are we the ones bringing up the obvious. How can I archive backups, and test them (a good reason for example would be to find out just which build exactly killed the backup/recovery to DVD function), while keeping my disk sizes down? We need you to tell some of your people to get off the cloud and come back to earth, where real people, with real missions, depend on real media in their hands, and in some instances, do not always have online connectivity.

I have been notified by the design team that they will look into putting back what they removed to make this work... and your user community would probably appreciate that notification.

What was the last build this worked on? Or did it ever work on Backup & Recovery 10 at all??? (i'm 99% sure I already know the answer... and if acronis is praticing backup/archiving, it should also know).
