Can't backup one virtual machine - Backup and Recovery 10 - Virtual Edition

Thread needs solution

I have a 2008 Standard x64 server that has four virtual machines.

All virtual machines backup fine except for one. This virtual machine is a 2008 R2 Enterprise X64 machine.

Here is the error I'm receiving:

 Hello Jason!

Thank you for reporting about the issue! I understand your concern and will be glad to assist you.

Unfortunately there can be several reasons for this problem, so the isue requires investigation. Could you please gather the following information?

  1. Acronis Info from the host machine
  2. Event logs (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.mcs) from the host machine in *.evtx format (System + Application)
  3. Acronis Report from the host machine
  4. D: drive pecularities (is it a local drive/NAS drive/cluster shared, etc.)
  5. Where HVDs that can be successfully backed up are located

Send this information to us either by submitting a support request or attaching them to your Private Message to me. It will help us to localise the issue and provide you with an appropriate solution.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

I couldn't ever get the reports to run. The report collector would actually crash. This was before we updated to the latest build, but the backup is still doing the same thing. Haven't tried running the report collector this time around. The odd thing is, is if I turn off the virtual machine, it backs up fine?

Dear Jason!

Thank you for your comment and for keeping us posted, I appreciate that.

Looks like some running processes prevents our product from making a Snapshot - thus it reports that the target virtual machine drive location is unreachable. Unfortunately without the diagnostic information it is still hard to say what exactly is preventing us from the backup, so I'd appreciate if you could follow the instructions in my previous comment. Should the Reports fail to run, please gather manually in addition to Event logs D: drive pecularities and location of HVDs that can be successfully backed up:

  1. Windows System Information
  2. Logs from the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Acronis

Thank you once again for your cooperation!

We're waiting for news from you!

What can I do for backup these machines?

Hello Ercan,

Thank you for your message and welcome to our forum. I will definitely help you with resolving this issue.

It occurs because there is not enough free space on the data store for the virtual machine snapshot. Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 ESX Virtual Appliance uses VMware APIs to create a snapshot, and the free space available on the data store should be at least the size of the largest virtual disk of the virtual machine that fails to be backed up.

To resolve this issue, increase free space on the data store where the virtual machine is located.

As a workaround, you can also install Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Agent for Windows or Linux on the virtual machine in question, and back it up by connecting directly to it and creating a backup plan, or by adding it to Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Management Server and applying a policy to it.

If the provided solution does not help, collect Virtual Appliance logs and contact our Support team directly so that we can assist you.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.

Hi.

I'm having the same problem when backing up some virtual servers on ESX. The error I'm getting is:

Failed to open raw hard disk data file '[SATA_DS] FILESERVER/FILESERVER_1-000002.vmdk'.

Additional info:

Module: 83

LineInfo: c7610e0a857bed85

Fields:

Message: Awaiting task 'AttachHardDisk' has failed. Reason: Failed to add disk scsi2:2..

this vdmk file is 544 GB in size, and the datastore containing this virtual server has 1,1 TB free space.

This is the other error given after the one above:

Cannot find a partition with path '\comp_emu(vm:4219888e-acf6-8b46-92ef-276e49a4a13c?type%3dvmwesx)\hd_emu(2)'.

Thanks in advance.
