Clone HDD from Software RAID to Hardware RAID5

Thread needs solution

Hello folks,

I need to backup and restore a Windows 2008 SBS Server from a Software RAID (Some ATI OnBoard Chipset) to a Adaptec RAID Controller (RAID5).

Last week I tried the old True Image Echo Server with Universal Restore and it failed badly. I embedded the drivers for the Adaptec Controller, but after the recovery the thing wont boot. I even installed the Controller in the OS, made a new Image of the OS, but again failed to boot.

My last Idea is to install the RAID5 System within the "old System" (create a logical disk) and recover the Image to this disk in Windows (this time with the Backup and Recovery 10 - no universal restore). Then shut down and unplug the old HDDs, boot with the recently recovered new System on the RAID5 System. To me, this should work, because the OS knows the Adaptec drivers. But I am not so sure about that anymore due to the fact, that I already installed the drivers last week, which didn´t quite work out.

Anyone any better idea? I do not want to reinstall the OS. My customer did not buy the universal restore option to have me reinstall his Server....

Thanks folks!

After installing the new controller in the os everything should work with no problems (I've made such moves hundreds of times). After installing the new controller in the system (it has to boot at least once with the new controller) you could just copy the system partition to the new one. What exact is wrong? (errors when booting, not booting at all (bios not seeing os), BSOD)

Are you using Basic or dynamic partition scheme?

Check in Adaptec asm if correct array is set to boot.

Check if the restored system partition has active flag set?

Try fixing MBR via windows installation setup.

Marcin,
Any experience in VM to physical?

Prolient ML 350 with Raid 5.
