Cloning my hard drive
I have a asus eee 1000he laptop, using acronis 8.0 made the boot up disk and have already backed up my hard drive to a 500 gig external hard drive.
I have decided also to make a clone and thought it would just make a directory in the external hd but it seems to want to delete all partitions in the ext hd (which there are none) and delete all my data before starting the cloning process. Is it possible to partition part of the ext hd and clone to it?
The only other hard drive I could use is in my dell laptop c-500 with a 30gig hd with 3x 10gig partitions which 2 are unformatted and empty.
Is it possible then to connect these two laptops together with a usb cable and clone to one of the empty partitions.
Many thanks for any help...

What a great resource; I understand exactly what you outlined so I am going to change my intentions. I have my backup so my reasoning was to be able to check files on my former c:/ drive after I had re-formatted and installed a new o/s.
Having my backup is great so I am just going to copy c:/ to the ext hd for future reference. I notice right clicking on c:/ doesn't offer the copy option. What is the best method to do this?
Many thanks for your suggestions...

Right clicking does offer the explore option which opens the copy function as an option if you want to use the backup archive.
You could also simply restore the backup partition into a new location.
My choice would be download Karen's Replicator (free for personal use) and use it to simply copy or replicate the partition into wherever you want.
