Converting a virtual 2008 SBS server image, running on Hyper-V to a physical server with Acronis
Hello,
I have been given the above task for next week.
We are running 2 Win2008 servers on Hyper-V on Server08. 1 virtual server is SBS08 and the other is Server08. Both virtual servers have been imaged with Acronis Server 11.
The plan is to restore the virtual SBS08 acronis image onto the host server with universal restore to make it the sole physical server. We are doing this for performance benefits and to simplify backup and recovery.
My main concern is that even though Acronis is imaging the server as a "real" machine, there may be some complications as it is actually a Hyper-V VM.
I would like to hear from anyone that has done this before or whether this is actually possible?
If anyone could provide some suggestions or guidance for me then please do so.
Thank you

I'd first try to restore the image as a new VM to check it can be restored at all. Then, if possible, if you are going to restore it on the same physical host that runs VMs, I'd get another set of HDDs for the restore operation so that if something goes wrong during restore, you are not left without already-wiped-host and not-yet-restored VM.

Thanks for the reply.
Good idea to try a test to the same virtual setup first to ensure image works.
I will be attempting the test restore to a brand new server which is currently unused so destroying that server is not an issue. I won't have this option later this week so may need the spare HDD's if I cannot get it working in the next few days - that's if the client is happy to do this.
Thanks again.

FYI, I managed to finish the restoration in 2 days. It took many attempts but worked out well in the end.
The real restore will be done on a very similar Dell server so I am confident it will go well after learning of any issues from testing.
Main problem encountered was the keyboard and mouse not working after the restore but this was sorted after a few restarts
