M2N32 WS Professional recovery fail

Thread needs solution

I have a problem with mentioned motherboard (ASUS M2N32 WS Professional, bios is set to defaults) and Universal restore... On the end of recovery (copying is finished and then Universal restore is doing his magic) it says "Task 1 of 1 - Recovery (volume) > Failed"
I am trying to restore an universal image of Windows XP SP3 (with all latest updates) made in VirtualBOX (over the years I find it to be better solution then to build it on a real PC, less drivers clogging and junk)...
Anyway, I checked the log, and this is what it says (I am using Bootable CD, so a few typos are possible):

Type: Error
Date and time: 8/25/10 12:38:11 AM

I also tried to add a backed-up driver folder (using 3 different tools) in universal restore option, and also force system to install specific drivers, but no luck... System is still unbootable...
... so? any suggestions? Should I disable something on my MBO? I installed latest BIOS also...

Hi,

You might want to transfer this thread into either TrueImage or ABR10 forum (depending on which one you have). More people will see it there.

If you click on edit, you will see a drop down box that will let you transfer the thread to another forum.

k m8, thx
BTW, how do I remove a duplicate posts? I was getting an error while I was trying to post this (site problem), so I retried a couple of times, and now it looks like I was spamming...

You can't actually delete a post. The most you can do, if you are the thread starter is to change the title to something like duplicate Ignore etc.

There is a fault with the forum at the moment which we are told will be fixed by Friday of this week.

Hello Ritter and Colin!

Thank you for opening the thread regarding this issue and many thanks to Colin for his kind assistance!

Ritter, unfortunately it's hard to say for sure what caused the issue. I checked all our internal resources and there are no known issues matching your description. So the situation requires investigation.

Probably the issue is caused by the inability to access the drivers. Could you please move them to any other location? (To the same folder where the backup lies or local drive, etc.)

Should the issue persist even after moving the drivers, please gather the following information:

  1. Recovery log
  2. Drivers location
  3. Backup location

After that please kindly contact support directly with the information attached. Keep in mind that should there be any procrastination with the reply, you can always specify us the case number. We will do our best to speed up the process.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Thank you for your fast replay

1. I cannot (or I dont know) gather recovery log cos I use bootable CD, so I retyped the log in my first post...
2. I also tried to move drivers to other location, but same error appears. I also tried without adding any custom drivers location, but no luck... I checked with my WinPE, Universal recovery installs appropriate HAL, but still boot fails, so probably it has to do something with mass storage drivers, cos this motherboard uses nVidia server chipset drivers pack?! Anyway I suspect that it has to do something with weird TXT driver name or something...
Another thing, AUR10 sometimes "blacks out" when I am trying to recover system (ofc that happened only on this MBO). Couple of times it happened when I started recovery, and couple of times when universal recovery was installing HAL and drivers)
3. Since I use XP for large number of machine on my work, I also edited this version of XP quite a bit... For instance, folder "Documents and Settings" is on "D:\" instead of system drive... So I copy "Documents and settings", "Drivers" and *.tib file on D:\ partition, and from that point I use AUR10 to restore system. Also I tried recovering from USB disk, but no luck...
Since this point I had no errors with AUR10 (except one were I was integrating boot screen with TuneUp utilities, so when HAL changes from original, system fails, but I worked around this problem), and this one is kinda strange, I cannot figure it out... Also I tried turning off additional controllers on MBO, changing setup, but no luck... Windows XP installs normally... And I am using the latest version of Acronis Backup & Recovery Workstation (10.0.11369 i think).

I kinda managed to work around this problem...
At home I have one old PC with M2N MBO and X2 CPU... I took a HDD home, did Universal restore on that PC and started PC normally... OFC I did not installed any audio, VGA and chipset drivers, I only waited for windows drivers detection (I even moved NLDRV folder from Windir to other location with WinPE so it wouldn't install drivers that our programmers told me to integrate on XP disc)
At the end, it asked for reboot, I turned off PC, and put it back on original PC and it worked!
I still dont know why original method did not worked... Basically all M2N boards use nVidia chipset, and similar mass storage drivers... Probably some additional component on this bloated MBO caused failure:(

Hmm... It seams that this problem is appearing on all "WS Professional" motherboards... I dont exactly know which driver/device is causing the problem, but that device is not boot-critical. I restored system on P5WDG2 WS Professional, Acronis gave me the same error, so I rebooted, started Hirens boot CD, and there is a tool for installing Mass storage drivers. When I run the program, it found two devices, for first one it didn't had drivers, but he installed drivers for other device (IDE something driver). And PC booted with no probs at all.
If it is OK with this forum, I can give complete instructions on how to do this if any other member runs on same error.
