Migration from SBS 2003 server to new hardware

Thread needs solution

I've got an existing SBS 2003 server that is too small in storage and RAM. I'm wanting to migrate everything on the existing SBS 2003 server onto a new server. Has anyone gone through this scenario before?

Hello Gary!

Thank you for finding time to post this question!

Actually the scenario depends on several details:

1. Should you need to recover onto the new machine with the new mass storage devices (motherboard, chipset, RAID controller, From IDE to SATA or from SATA to IDE) , you will need to add the drivers for the new hardware, otherwise your system may not boot. For this you will need Acronis Universal Restore. Acronis Universal Restore is a special add-on for corporate versions of Acronis Backup and Recovery that allows you to restore your images to dissimilar hardware, and it is included into the installation package of the Acronis SBS Server edition.

In order to use Acronis Universal Restore you need to create the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media with it, here what you need to do for it:

  • Add the Acronis Universal Restore license to the License Server and run the installation file
  • On the page of specifying the components to get installed tick off the Acronis Universal Restore component
  • After everything got installed, please, go to Tools -> Create Acronis Bootable Rescue Media and proceed with creation of the CD which will contain Universal Restore

Please note that prior to restoring to new hardware you need also to contact the vendor of the RAID controller (or other mass storage device - e.g. SCSI disk controller) and request the latest drivers for this mass storage device.
Then please unpack them from the package they are sent to you, so that the drivers were in .inf and .oem format

Please boot the target machine with the CD created and follow the steps described in this User's Guide with the step-by-step screenshots.

2. Should the mass storage devices be identical feel free to proceed with simple recovery - everything will work. +

Thank you!
