Single Backup Server - SBS 2003 - Restore Options

Thread needs solution

I have just purchased Acronis Backup and Recovery for SBS and have a question about getting it setup.  I have one SBS 2003 server that has ALL my data/apps on it.  I want to install Acronis on THIS server to backup and protect itself.  I do have another Terminal Server that really doesn't do much and doesn't need to be be backed up.  My question is: Is that a recomended install or do I need another server to act as my management server?  The reason I ask is, what if my SBS server crashes and I need to restore it, how will my restoration go if it can't get to the management server? I plan on backing up the data to a USB connected external hard drive.  I can't find anything in the User Guide to support the restoration of a server, which also acts as the Management Server.

Thanks!

Patrick

Salut Patrick,

You can do something like this:

-> Install your licence server on the TS server

-> Install acronis agent on your SBS server

-> install console / media builder on your SBS server

-> Place your backup files on the ts server if you got enough disk space.

-> schedule a backup (full) on your USB drive, so you can take it out of your company in case of fire / major problem.

-> Create the rescue CD using the media builder.

In case of major failure (SBS server out of order, Raid failure, etc).

You can restore your OS/Data from the backup files located on the ts server using the rescue CD (bootable) which support network / raid devices.

To prevent any bad surprise:

Test at least one time your rescue CD on the SBS server (boot on the CD, check that the network support is ok / RAID driver is working).

Bonne chance !

Thanks for the reply Gilles,  what I want to do is use the external USB hard drive for all my main backups.  The TS server does not have enough space.  The question becomes, DOES restoration from scratch, such as Universal Restore, support restoration from an external USB hard drive?  If not then I'll have to dump the product since the customer does not have the resources for another dedicated backup server.

Another need I have is a concise and well written document for setting up and, in the event of a disaster, using Universal Restore.  Does one exist?  The User Guide is of no help.

How course, you will be able to use your USB drive to restore your server from sctach.

Rescue CD supports both network and USB connection.

OK, thanks.  What about my question about a document explaining how to setup and use Universal Restore, does one exist?

Hello Patrick and Gilles,

General information about Universal Restore can be found in 6.3.9 chapter of this guide. Also, please take a look at Installation Guide for Acronis Backup & Recovery Advanced Server SBS Edition.

Thank you.
