System Only Backup from a Full Disk Backup Home 2009

Thread needs solution

I recently had an issue with an installation that corrupted my OS (XP sp3 Pro). Since I do a daily incremental backup I was able to boot using the latest Acronis CD and do a full disk recovery. However, it took me a little time to determine exactly what was causing the problem and I ended up doing 3/4 full disk restores. Fortunately, they all performed as advertised and all I lost was the time needed to do the recovery.

However, the full disk restore recovered a lot of data that did not need restoring and increased the restore time. I probably could have just recovered the system items (Documents & Settings, Windows, Program Files)? Is there anything else that should be restored? Does the MBT partition need to be restored?

Thanks.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for posting your question, I will be happy to help.
Actually, to make the recovered system bootable and to have all applications completely functional you should restore the entire partition. Certainly, you can restore your files and folders only, and probably, you will receive the satisfactory results. Especially, if you also restore the appropriate register files (for example, \Windows\System32\Config\SYSTEM).
But the correct results are not guaranteed, the operating system may become unbootable, or you will need to reinstall the applications, everything depends upon the changes implemented for the system.
Therefore, the fastest way is to restore the entire partition.
