Backing up from a Dedicated Server and Restoring on a VMware Server

Thread needs solution

I have a dedicated server with windows server 2008 R2 and a SharePoint 2010 on it.
I want to get a backup of this SharePoint 2010 and then install it on another server with VMware ESXi.
and I'm not familiar with Acronis VMware products.
what should I do and what programs should I use for this?
thank you

Hi Tom,

If I correctly understood you want to perform a physical-to-virtual (P2V) conversion of your current server. In this case there are several options (here are 2 most common of them):

1) Use Acronis Backup for VMware (former Acronis vmProtect 9) http://www.acronis.com/en-us/business/backup/virtual-machine to create an offline image of your physical machine and then perform recovery of it as a VM. The process includes the following steps:
a) Create a bootable media with Acronis Media Builder (it's not included into trial version unfortunately) component
b) Boot the physical machine from this media and create an image saving it to some network share for example
c) Deploy a Virtual Appliance to the target ESX(i) host from the main installation package of Acronis Backup for VMware
d) Run Recovery and as the source for it select the image created at step b)

2) Use Acronis Backup for Windows Server http://www.acronis.com/en-us/business/backup/windows-server#key-features to create an online image of your physical machine and then restore it to a VM using bootable media.
The process includes the following steps:
a) Install Acronis Backup for Windows Server onto your source physical machine
b) Create a bootable media with Acronis Media Builder (in this product it IS included into trial version) component
c) Create an online image of your physical machine by running Acronis Backup for Windows Server and saving this image to some network share for example
d) Go to vSphere client connected to vCenter/ESX(i) host and create a VM which will be used as target for recovery (create virtual disks of required size/networking/etc.)
e) Boot the created virtual machine from the media created at step b) and from its interface perform the recovery of the previously created image. There will be an option to use Acronis Universal Restore which enables installation of VMware drivers into restored VM, so that it can boot properly. NOTE that this option is available in full version of bootable media only (there is no Universal Restore in trial by default - if you need one, then you should contact our sales)/

In general the choice depends on whether or not you want to continue protecting this server after migration (1st option is better in this case) or whether its a one-time task only (then choose the 2nd option)

Thank you.
