Replication vmware does not stop...

Thread needs solution

Hi, I use the funcionality of replication daily and it usually works ok. The other day I had to reclaim the free space in the virtual machine (thin disk) and for this I used "sdelete" and then the "vmkfstools -k" for the virtual disk. The process was ok, in fact the previous disk had 167GB and after that it left 89GB. The machine works ok and everything run smoothly.

The problem came when I had to use replication with acronis backup, it starts ok but it continued replicating for a long time, I had to stop 4 times the replications, one of them hit 500gb and counting and it was 17% only....

I deployed a brand new virtual appliance of vmware, restarted the esxi host but the results where the same.

Is there anything else I can do? I need replication urgently because it is our first method to recovery from a disaster.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

After shrinking the thin disk likely the CBT record for this VM becomes invalid. When performing incremental replication Acronis Backup for VMware relies on CBT entirely and without valid CBT replication will be performed in full mode thus overwriting the previously created replica. The numbers you see in replication traffic statistics are likely not accurate due to the changes made to the source machine (i.e. that's a GUI glitch). I'd recommended first of all to try reseting CBT on the source machine (see solution in https://kb.acronis.com/content/45682 ) and if this doesn't help then please contact our support team for further assistance. Remember to attach the replication log (View->Show Logs->Save All To File) captured after reproducing the problem to your support request .

Thank you.

Hi,

There are still CBT-related errors in the log file which should be fixed by resetting CBT record for particular VM:

Hi, It seems there was indeed a problem with the cbt, It seems if you follow the instruccions you gave me in the post and write false in ctkenable vmware 5.5 changes it to true automatically, there is only one way to do this in recent versions. You have to edit the file .vmx and use false for ctkenable and every ctk disk, then delete manually the ctk file in the virtual machine, start the machine, turn it off, edit the file again and change to TRUE the edited lines and the turn the vm on again.

Thanks for your support.

P.S. You should write this kind of instruccions in your own support site.

Hi!

Thank you for the details, it's much appreciated. I will coordinate your findings with our KB maintainers to provide extended instructions on how to properly reset CBT (looks like VMware KB article indeed lacks some important details).

Thank you.
