Upgrade from vmprotect 7 to 8. Wrong credentials

Thread needs solution

Hello.

I am upgrading vmProtect virtual appliance from 7.0.5173 to 8.0.8184. I select the existing virtual appliance then I am prompted for the password. I've tried every combination I can think of, I even changed the password from the web console and restarted the virtual machine, but it keeps telling me that I provided the wrong credentials. It appears this portion of the upgrade does not work.

I stumble upon another forum post about upgrading to 8 beta, and it was recommended to turn off the virtual appliance. I did so and the upgrade went well.

Whats the purpose of prompting for the password when it does not work?

Thank you.

Hi Micah,

Indeed such issue appears from time to time in different customers' environments, however so far we were unable to reproduce it locally in our environment. This means that the problem is not a common one and this procedure does work in most cases. Unfortunately without being able to reproduce the problem locally we are unable to find out the root cause of the problem and fix it normally (we have tried to get affected appliances from our customers, but the upgrade did work once we deployed these appliances in our environment, so the root cause is still yet unrevealed).

The credentials are required only when the virtual appliance is powered on during the upgrade procedure in order to only check the currently running tasks and safely terminate them. Therefore upgrading virtual appliance in offline mode is also a proper way to accomplish the task.

Thank you.

Ah - so the password is the one for the appliance itself. I hit this one as well - you can login to the webui and change the agent password there, or I think the default is 'root'
