VMP 9 Appliance Slow USB Backup

Thread needs solution

Hi All

Very frustrated with this problem so I appreciate everyones input. I am getting nowhere with Acronis support. Here is my story:

- I was using vmprotect 7 faultlessly as a Windows agent OR an appliance backing up to USB via network share.
- I upgraded to VM Protect version 9
- Most backups to USB (via a network share) fail since version 9, different errors each day
- I can backup to NAS fine on version 9, works every time.
- I have tried moving the USB to different machines and changing the backup destination path, still fails
- Since version 9 these backups to USB are slow. Some days I get 30mb/sec, others I get 8mb, some days I get 800k!?

How I have it working now is for it to backup to NAS, then it replicates this to the 2nd destination which is USB which means they are both successful as I believe it just copies the files from the NAS to USB. However if I just backup to USB as above it fails!?

I have tried new backup drives and I can also copy files to the new drives in Windows fine. I have also tried the Windows agent with the same faults.

Nothing seems to make sense.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,

First of all can you please post the actual errors you get when trying to back up to USB (connected as network share)? Also it makes sense to attach the full log which shows both successful (NAS as 1st destination and USB drive as 2nd destination) and failed attempts.

The speed inconsistency is likely related to either network load at the backup time or some general connection problems between Acronis Backup for VMware (former vmProtect) Agent and the destination. But still we need to check the logs first.

Thank you.

Hi Vasily

I will post these soon.

The network load is not the issue as these are run out of hours.

For example last night I ran a backup to USB and its the best I have seen it for months, running at 110mb /sec. Tonight it is running at 7mb/sec.

Same drive, same servers.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Can you please also clarify how you measure the speed? I mean do you check it from the usual web console, or use some alternative methods?

The difference looks huge, so it's definitely something that should be investigated. Also does it (slowness) happen when you perform full or incremental backups? It would be great to have at least 2 logs: one from "fast" and one from "slow" attempt, or if you capture the whole log (View->Show Logs->Save All To File), then specify the times/dates when these attempts were made.

Thank you.

Hi

I am measuring the speed by what the Acronis console reports. The web interface.

Just to report back it seems 2 of the servers can backup fine. I still get different speed results on different days that doesn't make much sense. As long as it is working and finishing overnight it isn't much of a problem. Why I have the problem since leaving version 7 is a mystery.

So now all I need to tackle is the last server. It is an Exchange 2007 server and currently backing up at 500k/sec when a minute ago one of the other servers was backing up at 100mb/sec. The office is shut, nobody is logged in. I don't have any of the advanced backups set such as Exchange etc. I am tempted to install veeam and see what happens as this backup now hasn't been working for months and the Acronis support has been terrible to say the least. The last time I spoke to them via email they asked me to run and internet speed test (?!) which is ridiculous as I am backing up locally to USB.

Why would it be related to my Internet speed? I am backing up to local USB

Hello David,
Thank you for your e-mail.
Could you please send us www.speedtest.net results to test the internet connection speed on your end when the backup is running at the normal speed and when the backup speed is below normal? We look forward to your response.

OK well....

I have gone back to backing up to NAS.. works fine and very fast, over 100mb sec. I can then copy to second location being the USB fine too. The same USB that crawls if backed up as first location.

The problem only arises if I backup direct to USB.

Weird.

As a further update if I plug the USB drive into a normal PC and backup across the network it all works. If I put it into a virtual machine it does all of the above.

Hi David,

Sorry for the late response. Have you made any progress with our support team? The check via speedtest.net obviously doesn't make any sense and I'm now checking with our support managers on where we stand with the case (I've been unavailable for a couple of weeks so now I try to catch up things here).

Thank you.
