Added an X to the end of the save file name

Thread needs solution

Hello everyone,

I have been using Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office for many years for my backups and following the purchase of a new laptop I am surprised to see that Acronis systematically adds an "x" at the end of the backup file name.

Could someone tell me what the addition of this "x" means thanks in advance

Hi Joel.

Regarding the addition of "x" at the end of your backup file name, this is a normal because the agent detects a duplicate file name in the backup location.

This can occur if you are backing up the same files multiple times with the same name, or if you have multiple backup plans saving files to the same location with identical names. The backup name will be changed.

If you mean literally the letter X appears that's not normal to happen and we would need to investigate unless we are are talking about the types of file .tib and .tibx ( https://kb.acronis.com/content/63569 ).

Hope this helps.

Good morning,

Thank you for your answer, in fact this also happens when there are no files in the directory intended for backups. The phenomenon occurred during the very first use of the program.

Same with a new installation of Windows and also in use with bootable media on USB key. When a file already exists it adds 00001.

This X, at the end of the file name does not seem normal to me, it only occurs on one of my 8 PC's protected by Acronis.

There is no mention of this behaviour in the ACPHO user guide: Backup file naming section!

For older versions of ATI it mentions as follows:

If you are creating a new backup, and there is already a file with the same name, the program does not delete the old file, but adds to the new file the "-number" suffix, for example, my_documents_inc_b2_s2_v1-2.tib.

There is no equivalent statement for how encountering an existing backup file will be handled by ACPHO, so if the addition of 'x' to the end of the file name is correct, then Acronis should document this for users!

Note: I have never seen any of my own backups be appended by an X, nor any reports from other users in these forums.

Ok, thank you again for this answer which enlightens me nothing on this phenomenon.

Anyway, I prefer to abandon Acronis since backups take 5 times longer to complete compared to Macrium which I decided to adopt.

The recent switch from perpetual versions to annual subscription versions is also an important reason for this decision.

Thanks for the details.

In fact that's not an expected behavior unless your are talking about the backup file format.

Could you please attach here screenshots from that situation because that should be investigated?

( Unfortunately, the file attachment is currently not available on forum, please use a third-party sharing app and send us a link here ).

Thanks.
