Backup fails because destination drive not accessible??

Thread solved

OK so here is a new bit of weirdness...  I have been running ATI happily for two years on my machine with no problem.  I have set it to back up by system drive C and data drive A to a dedicated on-board drive B, daily incremental backup, and it creates a new full backup every seven days.  It also backs up drives C and A to the cloud every week.

Today I see an error that the local backup failed because the destination B:\ is not accessible.  I have tried re-running the backup several times with the same result.  But as far as I can tell there is nothing wrong with drive B:\.  I have error checked the drive with no problems, I can read and write files without any issue, and Crystal Disk Mark doesn't show any performance issues.  What could be going on here?

If you just had a Windows update ( Especially Win 10) the GUID of the drive has possibly been changed. Try re-selecting the destination drive in the TI GUI.

Thanks, I already tried that with no joy.  But you are right, I did get a win10 update this morning.

Ed, try doing a Windows Restart to see if that will clear this issue?

Tom is correct that reselecting the destination drive should normally clear this type of error, assuming that the drive GUID was changed due to a Windows Update, so the next step would be to check the log files.

There is a new log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools KB page.  See the link in my signature for the MVP Assistant tool.  In the new tool, look at the Backup Worker logs if you are creating .tibx files for this task, otherwise look at the Demon logs.

What Steve said. Restart.

 Hi Steve,

Thanks.  I have rebooted my system several times and reselecting the destination drive, but that doesn't work.

I downloaded the MVP assistant tool as you suggested and here is a screenshot of the Backup Worker log.  I don't understand it, maybe you can? :)

Ed, your screen image shows that ATI is trying to delete B:\My disks.tibx but isn't finding that file, so the next check is to look at your B: drive and see if there is a My disks.tibx file shown there?

For log files, please just select the text shown in the right panel and copy / paste this to the forum topic, rather than using screen capture.

Hi Steve, the files in my B: drive are called "My disks_full_b92_s1_v1.tib", "My disks_inc_b92_s2_v1.tib", and then so on up to "My disks_inc_b92_s4_v1.tib".  There are no other files or folders on the disk.

Sorry about the screen grab! :)

Ed, if you have no .tibx files on your B: drive, then something strange is happening here!

I would recommend doing the following:

For your My disks task, click on the caret (v) and take the option to Delete then to only Remove the task settings.

Next, to the right of '+ Add backup' click on the caret (v) and then on 'Add existing backup' - navigate to your B: drive and pick the most recent of your My disks_inc_b94_s2_v1.tib files which will add back a task using that file name in the GUI.

Rename the added task to remove all the extra _inc_ etc stuff.

Finally, reconfigure the task settings, i.e. pick / confirm the Source disk selection, the Incremental backup scheme options, Schedule, Exclusions, Notifications etc.

When all looks as expected, run the task using Backup now!

Because the backup files are of Disks imported from an earlier version of ATI, the log for the task will be shown in the Demon section in the log tool.

Steve, thanks for that.  Sadly, it didn't work!  I did all you said, reran the backup, and am still getting the same error I showed at the start of this thread.  The log from the Demon section of the tool is as follows:

Ed, the log shows the following specific error:

TrueImage::Archive::MakeDestinationUnavailableError
| Path: B:\
| StrId: \local\hd_ev\vol_guid(DD7CC470477970A34BC01D9F2145E7FD)

Please open either a Command prompt or Powershell window and run the command:
mountvol b: /L
and see if you see the above volume identifier listed for your B: drive?

PS D:\powershell> mountvol s: /L

    \\?\Volume{a7fdbf40-0000-0000-0000-100008000000}\

PS D:\powershell>

Thanks again Steve, I did as you asked and here is what I got:

PS C:\Users\Ed Blagden> mountvol b: /L
    \\?\Volume{dd7cc470-70a3-4779-9f1d-c04bfde74521}\
PS C:\Users\Ed Blagden>

Obviously the formatting is a bit different but it looks like the volume identifier is a bit different.

Ed, thanks for checking!

Another test please!  Can you make a new Disk backup task of the same Source disks and to the same B: backup drive and see if this will actually run?  Use a unique task name please!

Hi Steve,

Man, this is so frustrating.  I did as you said, even moved the original .tib files into another folder, and got just the same error message.

For some reason ATI seems to have taken a dislike to my B: drive, after having worked happily with it for the last 2 years.  I'm wondering whether a complete uninstall / reinstall of ATI may be the way to go.

Yikes!  I have solved my own problem!  Sorry for sending you all round in circles.  Turns out that Windows Defender was treating my entire B: drive as a Protected Folder and was blocking ATI from making any changes.  I removed drive B: from the list of protected folders and now everything is working as normal.  Goodness knows how B: became listed as protected in the first place... it may be something to do with me turning off ATI Protection services the day before yesterday and re-enabling Windows Defender.

Steve: so sorry for wasting all that time.  I really appreciate.

Ed, glad that you have found to root cause of the issue here - it something I haven't come across with Defender, so something new to learn today!  Thanks for the feedback about the protected folder which may help other users!

Yes, the protection of B drive by Defender is not something I have come across; presumably the same can happen to drive A. Could it have something to do the update to Defender that occurred in the last few days?

Ian

Ian, from what I saw looking at the Defender settings, this is unlikely to have been turned on automatically as the 'Controlled folder access' has to be turned on separately in the Virus & threat protection section.  It was not enabled on my own system where I am using Defender.

Thank you! This solved it for me.
