"cannot find 1" message when trying to recover file from backup

Thread needs solution

Windows 8.1 fully updated

Acronis True Image 2021 Build 39216

Upgraded from Acronis True Image 2020 to Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials this year

Backup onto Synology DS918+ Raid 10, 4 x 3TB drives.

When I try to recover a file from a backup, I keep getting a pop-up window that says "cannot find 1"

I click cancel about 20 times and the message dissapears.  I try to recover a file, but the recovery fails.  Luckily I dont need to recover anything urgently, but would like to resolve this issue before I do need to recover something more urgently in the future.  I have considered redoing the whole backup by creating a new backup plan.

Timbo, welcome to these public User Forums.

The 'cannot find X' message is typically caused because one or more files have been deleted outside of using the tools provided by Acronis, i.e. using Explorer.

Acronis track all files created by backup tasks using both metadata and a database, so when files are deleted or moved using another tool, that metadata / database information is left still pointing to the location where Acronis expects to find the file(s) and an error is thrown when it / they cannot be found!

If you need to remove unwanted files, then you should use the Clean up versions tool provided for each backup task to do this, or else use the automatic cleanup rules for the task.

For this situation, it is impossible to tell what the error is just from the image of your files.

I would suggest doing two immediate checks:

First, sort the files in your NAS folder by date order, then work your way through these starting with the initial _full_b1_s1_v1 file for each version chain, checking that there are no missing files or gaps in the numbering etc.

Next, use the Validate option to let Acronis check the files and compare with the stored metadata & database information.  If errors are found, Acronis will post a pop-up message for each one with options.  If files have been moved, you can reselect them from the new location, if deleted or missing, then take the Ignore option if offered, otherwise the cancel option.  Continue with validation until the process is finished!

If you want to reduce the time for the above, then you could use the Clean up versions tool to remove the oldest version chain of files to help with this.

KB 61844: Acronis True Image 2019, 2020 and 2021: How to delete old backups

Hello,

Thanks for the reply.  I see that I have two full backups in the same folder:  My folders_full_b2_s1_v1.tib and My folders_full_b1_s1_v1.tib

Do you think that maybe I need to separate the two into 2 distinct folders?  I do not see any files missing.  I do see that some are double or even triple, see the underlines.

If I split the files into two subfolders, acronis would be able to read them?

When I got the error message "cannot find 1" I thought that that meant it cannot find folder labeled number 1.

Thanks,

Timo

PS:  I have backups on other harddrives as well, so no big deal.  Plus I made a fresh backup yesterday onto a brandnew folder as well.  It is just interesting problem to solve during my time-off.

Timo, having these backup version chains all together in the same folder shouldn't cause any issues as is how this is designed to work when all the files are for the same 'My folders' task.

The presence of the _v2 v3 v4 files suggests that issues were encountered during the backup task and it was restarted and created the further version files to complete the operations.

All the files look to be correct in terms of the sequence of numbering, so whichever version '1' is being looked for isn't obvious, hence why validation of the chain is probably the best way forward for this.

Timbo,

Reviewing backup dates I see that on 7/2/2021 a full version backup was created as b2-s1-v1.  Also on 7/2/2021 I see a diff version backup was created as b1-s32-v1.  The next diff of this chain appears to have been created on 10/4/2021, why the long time period between these slices?

This suggests that the backup task failed in some way and was not creating backup files as scheduled or, you made changes to the backup task which created a failure.  Did you manually run the b2-s1-v1 full backup on 7/2/2021?  If yes did you change the task in some other way like selecting different folders or files from what was before in the task prior to 7/2/2021?

Hello,

I do backups manually.  I have to turn on the NAS and then I do a backup.  So sometimes it might be a long time before I do a backup again.

How do I validate the chain?

In Explorer, right-click on one of the .tib files, then expand the Acronis True Image option and select Validate.

In the main ATI GUI, click on the caret 'v' to the right of the task name and take the Validate option from the drop-down menu shown.

I started validating the files.  At first try I got an error message. (see image).  It does say that it is not good to re-use the same folder for a new backup.  So that is probably where I went wrong.  I think I changed the properties of the backup at one point, or maybe I copied the backup task to create a new one and used the same backup folder.  I might just end up deleting this old backup and all its files and continue with my new backup.  Validating process is running now though.

Yes, always create a new location for an new task.

It has been validating the whole day and at the end I got an error message>  cannot find 6.  Not sure if that means it cannot find file number 6 or if it cannot find 6 files.  It is taking some time to troubleshoot this thing mainly because each action I take takes a few hours.  I will continue on.

Also, I tried to "add existing backup" using the files, but nothing happens.

Timo, if you take the Cancel option for the missing file '6' or whatever number is shown, it should continue with the validation process.

The '6' refers to a single file within the version chain but would probably need to look at the Demon log created by the validation process to see if it gives a more obvious file name to check for?

Download a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool and use this to look at the logs to see if they show any issues during the operation process?

You need to be using the new log viewer tool per the link below.
MVP Assistant update for Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office (Version 1.1.6.0)

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) or using Cloning then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

I see that I can retrieve old files using file explorer and simply opening up the backup files there.

It is working now.  I did the following (note: some of these steps might not be needed, but I was just trying different things).

1. I noticed that I had two backups (backups b1 and b2) going to to the same folder on my NAS.  So I created a new folder on my NAS and cut the backup files from b2 into this new folder.  Now I had two folders on my NAS, one for backup b1 and one for backup b2.

2. I clicked on "add existing backup" in the acronis GUI, and pointed it to backup folder b1.  It did not seem to do anything (which is why I did it two times), but looking at the activity log, it worked anyway.

3. Today I clicked on "clean up versions..." and went with the standard settings and clicked ok.  Not sure what this does really.

4. I validated the backup, and now it says the backup is valid.
