Can I create volume to clone c: drive without damaging existing data?

Having purchased Acronis Home 2011, I want to clone my C: drive to an external drive that contains data already. I think I want a clone and not a mirror so I can boot the system from the external drive in emergency. Can I create a volume for the clone, or do I need to use the entire drive? Obviously a newbie..

You can only clone entire drives with TI. Any existing data on the destination drive would be lost.

Also, you won't be able to just boot the external drive and have it work. I assume you're using Windows. Be aware that Windows won't boot and run from a USB drive unless it's modified.
