Clone from Bootable Media or from Windows?

I urgently need to clone my failing HDD (receives a SMART error at boot) to a new one of the same size. Is it recommended that I do the clone from Bootable Media or from within Windows?

I assume that it wouldn't make a difference but I just wanted to check.

It's generally recommended to do the cloning outside of Windows (boot to the TI/DD CD). Also, install the new drive into its final position before cloning. This is especially important when the computer uses non-standard drive geometry. Basically, it means that the new drive needs to be connected internally. The original (source) drive can be connected internally or externally (USB).

Disconnect the old drive before booting into Windows on the new drive.
