Disk Director 12 upgrade and reversion install failure

Thread needs solution

I'm a long time user of DD, for years, version 12. The platform I use it on is a windows7 OS, 64bit, patched. I upgraded to version 3297 in Jul18, no problem.  Have recently used it to recover during a hard drive replacement (6days ago), worked fine.

Today check (9 Feb 2019) noted a new  download available - upgrade 2.  Downloaded it, read the release notes, which said to un-install existing version:  did that, removed OK.  Installing the upgrade:  inserted keys OK, then during the install got an install fail message (screenshot attached).  After OK, escaped, re-boot, tried again, same result:  twice in succession.

Ok, escape, re-boot, cclean system including registry, re-install the 3297 version.  same result;  install fail.

So, now my PC doesn't have a licensed version of DD12 installed, because an upgrade process failed.  Why?  How do I get DD12 back?

Updated post

That windows error message - despite the PC actual cpu being an Intel i3-4170 64bit , the message says amd64 - leads to a score of postings, mostly about the Microsoft visual C++ re-distributable.  But there are 16 of those installed, various years and versions.  Clearly, not one of those.

However, it seems likely that the uninstall process recommended in the release notes removed whatever support the installer needed for the next step.  Does Acronis need to adapt it's installer and advice too?

Still waiting  . .

Hi Ekaterina,

Thanks for the detailed response. Summarising, one of those was successful.   I'll take each item in your reply in turn.

1 and 2.  the first 2 links were to issues with windows 10.  The 1st link also dealt with upgrade to version 3270 whereas i was upgrading from v 3297.  So - for the moment - ignored those pending review of the 3rd link.

3.  This was a link to Acronis article 14331, which identified a cause - a missing C++ redistributable in the OS - and a comprehensive listing of possible solutions. solution 3 of the 6 listed seemed the most easily applied, so I focussed on that.  Of the 4 versions of C++ redistributables listed in solution 3, only 2 applied to windows 7.  I tried the earliest one first - C++ redistrbutable 2005 SP1 (x86) - on the premise that if that did not work, there still the later C++ 2008 to work with.

After installing the C++ 2005 item, I tried re-installing DD12 v3297 from the saved download file.  And that worked, no error messages: DD12 v3297 operable from the desktop again.

For the moment, I'll live with this older version until I've recovered from the anxiety attack.  I've attached a screenshot of the microsoft C++ re-distributables on my machine.  There are now 17 of them, and I've red-boxed the one which has today's date on it.  It hasn't got the same name as the one I installed, but there was only one installed on this date.

Comment.

There are mixed messages - consistent, but mixed - about Acronis product upgrade processes:  with True Image, installing an upgrade or new version on top of the older one is not only possible but seems to be the preferred method, and it works fine. The advice for Disk Director is contradictory:  article 46985 says uninstall an older version before installing DD12, but the later article 47188 says DD12 will automatically uninstall DD10 or DD11.

So, I last used DD12v3297 a week before the post: initialise a new drive, create volume etc, and it worked fine.  Then I reviewed the DD12 product advisory, noted the upgrade and downloaded it. I checked the release notes for the DD12 upgrade 2 item that was displayed in my product list:  it said un-install old one first, which is what I did: v3297 now gone.  That was detailed in the first post on this issue.  Given what happened next:

 1) the upgrade would not install, and neither would reversion to the original DD12v3297, then

2) installing the C++ 2005 SP1 item which then enabled a successful install of v3297 -

it seems obvious that the uninstall of 3297 removed the C++ redistributable that the subsequent install needed, and errored on it's absence.

I suggest therefore that the installation of software like DD12 from any source - download file or disk - should check for essential components, and install them if they are not already on the PC.  Clearly the download install file of DD12v3297 did not do that.:  by chance when I first ran it July 18, the necessary C++ item was available, but when I ran it again in Feb 2019 it wasn't, probably as a result of the MS monthly updates in the 6 month period between.
