partition shrink fails without error; could it be missing BOOT.INI ?
After shrinking my primary healthy NTFS boot partition using Acronis Disk Director, the old size still shows when I go into Window's Computer-> Manage-> Disk Management.
So I assume the resize has not taken effect.
Ever since I first purchased it new about four years ago, my XP computer has displayed an Invalid BOOT.INI message on startup, yet it has always booted up fine.
This command:
Start -> Run : C:\boot.ini
raises an error that boot.ini cannot be found.
Since I belong to the if-it-aint-broken-dont-fix-it school, I did nothing about it. However, my goal now is to turn the XP system image into a VHD using DISK2VHD, and bring it up as a Virtual PC under Windows 7 on my new PC. (That's why I am trying to shrink the partition because I read it cannot be larger than 127GB.) Before creating the VHD, I'd like to repair the missing BOOT.INI.
However, I cannot put my hands on the Windows XP Pro Startup Disk. I think my house must have a troublemaker poltergeist, because it is only the things I really, really need that seem to go missing. Why don't the piles of junk ever disappear? QED.
I have a single disk with a single active healthy NTFS partition, and only one O/S, namely XP Professional (full retail version). I have the product key saved in an online vault.
Can I simply save the following text file (from this MSFT KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022) as BOOT.INI in the root of C drive?
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
Thanks for the help!!!

Here are the screenshots of DiskManager and DD's view of the partition. I have set the File Explorer to show hidden/system files and it's not there; nor is there a tab for BOOT.INI on the System Configuration Utility (msconfig) dialog; it shows only: General|SYSTEM.INI|WIN.INI|Services|Startup|Tools.

Create the boot.ini file and see if it helps.
If you tried doing the resize from DD in Windows, try it from the DD CD and see if that works. It's recommended to create an image backup first (in case of problems).
