volume size not updating

Thread needs solution

hi,

i started with two volumes. Deleted one. Then resized the other. Disk Director indicates that i have the capacity of the two volumes added to each other.

however, i've booted windows xp twice now and it still indicates that my volume hasn't changed since i resized it.

does anyone know how to tell Windows that the volume is a new size? thanks.

Scott,

The problem looks as though it is because there is no drive letter assigned to your new partition.

Either in DD or WDM (right click on My Computer and select Manage, drill down the resulting form until you get to WDM. The unassigned drive should show up in there) assign a drive letter. XP should then be a happy bunny.

Scott,

Can you post a screenshot of what Disk Management shows? That is a more direct comparison than Explorer.

hi,

sorry for the delay. there's something going on with the hard drive. the pc doesn't boot up every time now. sometimes i have to first go into the windows repair console, exit out and then i can boot windows xp.

Windows Disk Management curiously shows the full size of the volume. this is strange. WDM says i have 30 gb, and when i right-click on the 'c' drive in Windows Explorer, it says my C drive capacity is only 10 gb.

it seems like i'm reaching the point where i should reinstall windows. my windows installation doesn't like the resizing of volumes, and it isn't picking up from WDM what the true capacity is.

thanks for the help, though.

You could try running chkdsk /f on the partition and see if it finds anything wrong. I would make a backup first, though.

thanks Mudcrab. i already have run chkdsk. it said that i had some files that were corrupted. i'm not sure of the size of the corrupted files.
