3 Tb My First Backup - Why so Long?

Thread needs solution

I bought ATI 2106 years ago and never used it.  Now new desktop, I wanted to back up my 3Tb of data, mainly pdfs, mpeg movies, data files from desktop PC to a 5TB external Samsung drive via USB3.   This is a File/folder type of backup not a disk image.   Start o9ff fine but after 3 hour has grinded to almost a halt.  For example, 1 hour ago it had completed 1.51 Tb and said there were 6h 47mins to go.  Now it says 1.53 Tb copied with 7h and 37mins to go.    Is this typical?

3TB is quite a lot of data, so it will inevitably take a while. I have seen slowdowns such as you describe when copying files for one computer to another. The type of files being backed-up, the compression level selected, and the priority given to the backup task when it was created, can have an impact. The USB port to which the USB dive is attached can also have an impact. On desktop PCs the USB ports on the back tend to be more reliable than those on the front. The speed of the USB port will also be important - USB 2 one will take a very long time; any version of a USB 3 port should not have any issues as the transfer rate from a HDD will be much less than the capacity of the USB port. Another possibility is that the USB port is going into sleep mode while the backup is being process ready to be transferred; check the power setting for the USB port to see if sleep mode is enabled.
