Back up to a different PC

Thread needs solution

Hi folks

The scenario is that I have just upgraded two PCs to Windows 10 at my flying club which we will call PC1 and PC2 and I want to set up automated backups. Both have ATI 2016 installed and PC1 has a second HDD installed (D:). I can setup PC1 to backup automatically to its local HDD (D:) which works. What I want to do is have ATI back up PC2 to D: on PC1 automatically. What that entails is for ATI on PC2 to wake up (WOL, magic packet?) PC1 to get access to the second HDD (both on the same network). I can do it with Windows task scheduler but would prefer that ATI did the whole thing. Can it be done?

You can certainly try it.  The backup setup options can be set to wake PC at the scheduled backup scheme time set.  This works for some but not for others but certainly worth giving it a try.

Thanks Enchantech

I already have that function happening at home but it only wakes up the local PC.

Cheers

Just had a thought. ATI has a "pre command". Can I run a batch file to send a (WOL) magic packet to an IP address? I guess the only issue then is to wait till it wakes up...

If you are scheduling the backups for certain times, you can set a wakeup scheduled task on the 1st computer directly in scheduled task manager (on PC1 direclty.  Then schedule the backup of the other computer to run right after.  Alternatively, you can try to automate a WoL from PC2 using a third party app, but keep in mind that the first computer may need to have WoL turned on in the bios and or configured on the NIC.  It should work, but you might just find it easier to run a wakeup task directly on PC1 and schedule the backup shortly after on the second PC.

Thanks all.

I think I'll try the WOL app in the ATI command line just to see if it works and report back (the PC's are remote from me). I've used Wolcmd.exe which works very well.
