Back ups freezing

Thread needs solution

I'm sure this has been asked before but I'll ask again, I have Acronis True image 2016 and I am having trouble with my File and Folders back ups. The Back up is either freezing on the Calculating Back up or it starts the back up and just freezes part way through and just sits there. If I try to stop the Back up it does not stop and the only way to exit the Back up is to restart the computer.

Any tips to fix this problem would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi Territorian,

Could be a few different things.  I'd first try disabling Microsfot Windows VSS and see if the backup can run using the Acronis Snapapi backup method instead.  A lot of times, the calculating time remaining is actually related to a fault in Microsoft Volume Shadow Service (VSS).  There are 3 methods (pick one) you can try and see if teh backup runs after disabling VSS.

Disable VSS in Acronis - 3 different ways

If it's still having issues after that, it could be network connectivity or permissions if it is backing up to a network share (especially if using wirless instead of a cable).

Bad disks (source and/or destination) such as bad/dirty sectors or blocks could be difficult to read - performing a "chkdsk /f /r" from an elevated admin command prompt (right click and select "run as administrator" before launching) on both the source and destination may find bad sectors and attempt to repair them

OR... sometimes upgrading from previous versions of Acronis or upgrading the OS where Acronis was already installed, may not have gone just right.  Sometimes, if nothing else is helping, completely uninstalling and reinstalling may be all it takes.  However, to uninstall completely, please see this thead which has some extra steps to help ensure everything gets removed before you insall again, if you end up going this route.

Bobbo's ATIH 2015/2016 clean removal recommendation

Good morning Bobbo

First of all thanks very much for your reply to my post and sorry for the delay in thanking you. Your solution for disableing the VSS in Acronis 1) 3) You can manually edit the backup task and then it will only use the snapapi backup method: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/45832#comment-346558 has worked for me it took me a couple of goes but it's sorted now.

I just have one more question for you if you could help out.

I have got the back up running but the issues I have is I've had to use the "Create only differential versions after the intial full version" as when I was using

the "Create a full version after every 6 differential versions" when it came to do the Full version again I was running out of space on my hard drive as the full version backup is nearly 1.1 TB and the back up drive I'm using is only 2.0 TB.

So my question is, Is it possible to delete the "older Full version backup" prior to the "New Full version backup" starting to allow for enough space on the HDD to accommadate the new backup. I realise this could be a problem if something went wrong and you could loose the backup all together.

Thanks again for your help previously.

Cheers Dave.

Unfortunately, not really.  Acronis is trying to make sure your data is protected and doesn't want to delete the old ones before the new one is complete.  Since you are tight on space and your fulls are roughly more than half of your available backup space, you really need a larger backup drive - 3 to 1 is probably good so if you are backing up a 1TB of data in a full, then at least a 3TB would be ideal - the amount of space beyond that depends on how many diffs and/or version chains of your backups you want/need to maintain as well.

However, you can delete the files manually in Windows File explorere, then "validate" or start a restore and it will tell you that files are missing and ask you to locate them or ignore them. Ignore them all and then start your backup and it will continue on.  The problem with this is you are vulnerable after deleting your only backup until the next full completes and it coudl be a little while backing up that 1TB.  Ideally, you really need at least a 3TB drive, but I'd probably be looking for a 4TB so that you can keep keep 1 full + 6 diffs (which I don't how big they are) and then let that next full complete before it cleans out the old backup.

Hey Bobbo

Cheers for the quick reply, I hear what your saying the puter hasn't had an upgrade for a couple of years so it might be time for a few upgrades.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Cheers.

Glad to help.  FYI, stay away from SSHD's for backups - they will not be faster and may actually be slower and cause problems.  If it were me, I'd probably grab the cheap 4TB WD blue (7200RPM) for about $110 and compliment it with a UsB dual hard drive dock and offline cloner (which doubles as a hard drive dock for up to 2 drives of 2.5" or 3.5" and can do full offline clones for about $35.  Not as portable as an external drive, but much more versatile and useful for backups, cloning and just being able to swap spare drives when you want.  If you have USB 3.0 on your computer this is a great, cheap and pretty simple solution.

Hey Bobbo

Great advice I have just been looking at HDD's I didn't I would use a SSHD it's only for back ups so I didn't think this type of drive would be of any benifit. I like the idea of the Dock that could work well for me.

Cheers again for the help.
