Backing Up A Network Drive With TI

I can point to a shared network drive and back it up successfully, but TI 2016 is never able to do a snapshot of it. It always gives: "Failed to create snapshot for backup." Since it can't snapshot the set of folders, it operates at a file level where it will fail if a file is in use or if access is denied. Is there any way to get it to work more like a true drive backup where those issues don't occur? If it can't, the network share is on a server. Is there server software from Acronis that can do it at a reasonble cost if TI can't do it? Thanks.
