Backup fails - 0x40001, 0x40011, 0x40019 and 0xFFF0

Thread needs solution

For the last few months I have been having issues with performing a data backup.  Disk backups seem to work fine.  The data backup will with a pop-up message similar to this:

Failed to back up file or folder '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy73\Users\Josh\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\Andrew Lloyd Webber\Phantom Of The Opera\11 Wishing You Were Somehow Here Aga.mp3'.

The emailed notification that I get is:

Each time, a different file is referenced.  It is never the same file.  The file that is mentioned is not corrupt or damaged as I can use it, rename it, move it, copy it, delete it without any issues.  It's not always an MP3 either.  It is just always random files in my collection of data.  The backup fails at different times also.  Sometimes it will do 10GB and fail.  I can run it immediately after the failure and it will get to 20GB before it fails.  I have yet to be able to complete a full backup because of this failure.

I have run checkdisk multiple times on the volume with the /r option and the /f option.  Checkdisk says there are no problems with the volume.  I thought maybe it was a failing drive, so I cloned and replaced the drive, but backups are still failing.  I've deleted the backup and re-created it numerous times with no success.  I've tried with compression set to None, but that also doesn't make any difference.

I've been a computer technician for over 10 years and am fairly good at troubleshooting odd issues and rarely ever have to contact support for anything, but this has me stumped.  I've searched the forums and support pages but can only find solutions indicating a bad drive or to run checkdisk, but nothing has helped to resolve this.

Joshua, this looks to be a VSS issue for the error message that is issued in the logs.

See https://kb.acronis.com/content/36200 for information on troubleshooting VSS issues.

See also https://forum.acronis.com/forum/82244 for where a similar problem was reported.

Another user had VSS errors and the work-a-round for them was to temp disable VSS, let Acronis Snapapi do the backup and then enable VSS (all with batch scripts in Acronis - before and after commands).  I have not personally tried it, but don't see why it wouldn't work.

I like the approach because it only temporarily disables VSS for the Acronis backups but enables it again in case other things need it afterwards. As long as you are not backing up active databases like SQL or Oracle, VSS is not needed and the Acronis snapapi backups should be fine.

Bobbo, thanks for the suggestion.  I was pretty sure it was VSS issue, I just couldn't find a way to fix it.  I never really thought about bypassing VSS for the Acronis data backups.  That work around you linked to seems to be doing the trick.  I'm still waiting for my first full backup to complete, but it's already over twice as far as it's made it since this problem appeared.  Assume that it's been resolved if I don't post again.

Awesome!  I guess the real question is why VSS is having issues, but that could be almost anything.  I had a similar problem on a laptop not long ago and bit the bullet and reinstalled Win10 from scratch again and then there were no issues.
