Can not boot from "Bootable media"

Thread needs solution

Hello,

After upgrading to build 6581, I created 2 CD's (normal + WinPE) for rescue on my PC Asus M32CD

Testing the bootable media :

1) on Asus M32CD, boot starts with screen "activate any key to continue" (translation). Doing this the standard booting sequence starts

2) on Dell S1747, boot starts same as above, but continue and Acronis rescue program opens

What can be the problem ?

On Asus I run Win10 Home and on Dell I run Win10 Pro

Asus (mnf 2016) : boot Uefi

Dell (mnf 2009) : boot Bios

DDH43, welcome to these user forums.

For the Asus UEFI boot system you need to boot the Acronis Rescue media in the same UEFI mode as your Windows OS uses, if you are using the standard, Linux based, rescue media, you may need to disable Secure Boot in the Asus UEFI settings, though the WinPE version of the media should be able to boot correctly.

Whwn booting and accessing your boot override menu check if you have two options for your CD/DVD drive, if so, pick the UEFI option.

Additionally, some systems just won't boot UEFI from a DVD/CD. You may want to try creatig it on a USB flash drive and then using your one time boot menu or boot override menu to specifically ensure that you are booting the USB flash drive in UEFI mode.

IF USING RAID (see below - if not, disregard)

If the ASUS is using RAID as the SATA mode (check the bios), you'll need to use the WinPE and have RAID drivers.  In most cases the Intel IRST driver would be sufficient unless you have a custom RAID controller that is not Intel.  You can use our MVP tool to build cutomized Acronis WinPE that automatically includes the IRST drivers (plus some new goodies we just added in).

It's about 50Mb so I can't post it in the forum, but you can grab it from Google Drive:  https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8uZDIFmupY7bTczX25KMHl2RVU.  Just extract and run the shortcut as admin (it may fail the first time since the shortcut link doesn't update automatically - if that still gives you trouble, enable hidden files/folders on your PC and you'll see the original .bat file.  Run that as admin instead.  We're only using the shortcut to ensure users "run as admin" and to help with the command prompt sizing to make it look prettier).

Hello,

Thanks for your replies.

1) My Asus PC (M32CD) which has an EUFI/BIOS in which you cannot disable the "Secure boot". (I find an article ((see attached)) explaining how you can do this, but my PC has only a few months and I want to find another solution for warranty purposes)

Help of Asus is out of the question : they give instructions  for an AMI 2.15.1226, my UEFI/BIOS is an ASUS manipulated 2.17.1246 !.

ASUS replies : "we cannot give more support as given" (translation). Not custumer friendly..........

2) I tried to create an USB drive with WinPE including Acronis add-on.

Problem : in trying to create this iso-file I got an error message : "failed to mount the source wim file", link to KB with error code

Can you help me to resolve this ?

For your info, I created an iso-file in the Acronis rescue on USB drive : this failed to boot. Probably due to the fact that this iso-file is Linux.

(In the bios is set as follows : "OS type= Windows UEFI mode")

Thanks

ddh43, from a quick search on Google, your ASUS M32CD is a 64-bit capable desktop system, and you can therefore create the Acronis bootable WinPE Rescue Media directly within the ATIH 2016 application on your USB stick.

I assume that you have already downloaded and installed the Microsoft ADK - if not, then the Acronis Rescue Media Builder will prompt you do do so when you select the option for WinPE.

For the USB stick, this should be a maximum size of 32GB but can be as small as only 1GB in size.

ISO images cannot be copied directly to a USB stick - put simply this will NOT work and never be bootable.

If you have the USB stick connected before starting the Rescue Media Builder it will be shown as a choice for the output media.  The WinPE Rescue media will not require you to disable Secure Boot in your ASUS UEFI BIOS.

Hello,

Perhaps my problems are not well explained.

I face problems to create the ISO/WIM file for Rescue Media Builder with WinPE media with ATIH 2016

I receive an error message : "cannot create rescue media.  Failed to mount the source .win file"

I have Windows ADK installed

Hi,

The Custom ATI WinPE Builder tool created by MVPs here on the Forum might help.  You can download the tool at this link:

https://forum.acronis.com/forum/127282

Thanks for the Acronis System Report information, this shows that the error you are seeing is caused because a component of the Windows ADK is not installed correctly.

message=Error 0x180021: Failed to mount the source .wim file. | line info: 0xaa76ebb96e7152b4 | bestand: k:\6581\products\imager\home\builder\logic\utils_winpe.cpp:1506 | functie: TrueImage::MediaBuilder::WinpeMediaBuilder::ProceedWithWIM | line info: 0xaa76ebb96e7152b4, k:\6581\products\imager\home\builder\logic\utils_winpe.cpp:1506, TrueImage::MediaBuilder::WinpeMediaBuilder::ProceedWithWIM | $module: ti_media_builder_vs_6581 | | error 0xfff0: The image could not be mounted because the wimmount.sys driver is not installed on this machine. Looking on my own Windows 10 system with the ADK installed, I see this wimmount.sys driver in a number of different folders, including C:\Windows\System32\drivers and the ADK folders - see screen shot below.

I would recommend reinstalling the ADK as Administrator.

Hello Steve & Enchantech

After reinstalling the ADK as administrator, the ISO file could be created.

Had some problems to install the Iso file to a USB stick but with the soft "Rufus" in the "GPT partition scheme for UEFI" mode I was able to boot with USB stick (without disabling the Asus Secure Boot)

Thanks for your help.

PS : I will also try the Custom ATI WinPE Builder tool created by MVPs, because in the advanced mode I see more possibilities to solve eventual problems/crashes.

ddh43, thanks for feeding back on your results of reinstalling the ADK and building the new media.
