"Cannot Create A Database"

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Here's my problem: as soon as I actuate Acronis TI 2016, I am greated with a message pane with the message in the Subject: "Cannot Create A Database". The only option is to cick 'Ok' which turns off the software. Pretty bizarre!!!

For some reason, ATI cannot create necessary files in the c:\programdata\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database folders, This could be an access issue or some anti-virus pgm issue.

I did not read your reply before deciding to try uninstalling and then re-installing the software. As I pen these words, the software appears to be working. This happened last week (I do my b/ups approx 1 wk apart) to me and I went through the same process successfully. I contacted Acronis support and they would not provide support w/o first paying their fee. I do have anti-virus and anti-malware software, but I have been an ATI user for years, have had every version installed when it got released w/o incident. Since upgrading to Windows 10 on this same machine, this problem has occurred 2x to me. Perhaps it's to do w/ Windows 10?

It could be Windows 10 Smartscreen at work here.  Smartscreen is suppose to give you a warning message when it decides to block content but like other errors or warnings this may or may not work correctly all the time.

You should add TrueImage.exe to the exclusions lists of your anti-virus and malware apps.  To modify Smartscreen to trust True Image follow the guide in the link below.

Thanks for your response!

I find it odd that ATI 2016 would seem to have worked once I downloaded and re-installed it, don't you?

Once again, I am getting the same greeting about "Cannot create a database" from the software as soon as I actuate it (with or without the external drive plugged into the USB port). Before actuating it, I need to give it Admin approval. I tried reducing the level of Windows Smartscreen's settings to the next one and that changed nothing.

I do run both Norton 360 AND Malwarebytes Antimalware on my PC. If the problem were arising because of some exclusion/inclusion list setting, why would it not occur all the time?

So, I tried 'Repairing' ATI 2016....it still -> "Cannot Create Database". I downloaded a re-install after uninstalling it. This time (as before reported here), it works. However, I wonder why when I use the same backup settings as always it does not make an incremental? See attachment.

Same problem.  ATI 2016 on Windows 10.  Can't tell you the build version, because the program won't start - "Cannot create a database".

I do daily differential backups, with a new full version every week.  This was working yesterday, but today it does not.

HELP!

I ran Acronis yesterday morning

Worked OK (there's something else odd I am looking into)

Yesterday afternoon there were multiple Windows and Toshiba updates to install

I did them all

Now Acrons gives me that "Cannot create a database" message

I tried dropping the Smartscreen setting by a notch - that did not work, so I put it back

When I start True Image I get the "Do you want this app to make changes to your PC?" screen like I always do, I click OK like I always do, but unlike yesterday and all the days before it "Cannot create a database"

I wish I could get my wife to use a Mac so I wouldn't have to support two systems and two backup processes.

The Ace Man & Cleve,

Stop using your existing task and create a new backup task.  Don't reuse the same task name. Start over with a new task name and a new storage folder or sub-folder.  Better to use a custom task with automatic cleanup sudh as below.

Custom Backup Scheme Discussion--extract
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/100416
Depending upon the type of backup scheme you wish to create, here is an example of each type. These can be set up for Disk image, or Partiton, or Files-folders backups. These example show how to set up automatic cleanup so the program will do the deletion after it reaches your set goal of how many chains to retain.

Editing an existing task is not recommended. Rarely does an edited task perform to user expectations. It is usually better to start with a new task using a new non-identical task name and point to a new storage sub-folder so each task has it own storage folder/sub-folder. Old task can be stopped or deleted from the task listings.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 6 Inc per chain. Store/Keep 4 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

GH13. Create Custom DifferentialBackup Scheme w/auto cleanup. ...Keep Full plus 2 Diff per chain. Store/Keep 2 chains. Use whatever number best fits your needs.

Michael,
Download the TI 2015 cleanup utility from my signature link item 4 which will uninstall the product and perform some cleanup. Follow with a new install and all new tasks. Your serial numbers may be needed for the re-install.

I am using Acronis 2016 TI with WIndows 7.  I am also started getting the error, cannot create a database.

If I use the Acronis TI cleanup utility, will I lose all the previous backups that I made previously?  There were soe updates applied to Windows 7 yesterday.  This morning is when I started getting the error.

But I cannot even get to the control panel of Acronis - the "Cannot create database" screen pops up and that's the end of it.

I will try uninstalling and re-installing the software.

I will also take a look at your Cleanup, but that sounds like a lot more work than I anticipated when I paid $$ for a highly rated piece of backup software.

What is happening with Acronis. Do not edit a task but start from scratch ? The new database design just sucks and is very fragile. And again, I have to complain that it is not possible to use two different usb drives with one backup job in exchange. Nobody from acronis cares and our customers are complaining. I just tell them, go delete all your tasks and start backing up you 300GB again....That´s really a good one. Sorry but it makes me sick what they have done with this program.

I keep getting a message "Cannot create a database" and "Operation has completed with errors"  when my back-ups are scheduled to run. This happens with all my back-ups now.

I have been using ATI for some years and now under Win 10 (64) latest build ATI 2016 has decided to fail.

I've exactly the same problem. It appears as follows:

  1. Start Acronis TrueImage 2016 Build 60272
  2. Accept message from User Account Control (Give Admin priviledges)
-> Error message appears (Original German message is "Kann eine Datenbank nicht erstellen")

I guess this is a serious and ugly bug in the software and I expect to hear that Acronis engineers are investigating for a solution - since it appeared more than two month ago.

There is a way to make TrueImage running again: Remove or rename the file C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\Archives.db. I have renamed it to Archives-errored.db

Kind regards,

Andreas

Thanks Andreas

I have re-installed the program and after a couple of false starts it now works.  As a matter of interest, since doing this I notice that I am no longer getting a message from ATI 2016 when I turn off the computer - something along the lines of 'your computer will be closed down once existing Acronis operations have completed'.  The appearance of this message seems to have started around the time I first experienced problems with the backups.  It no longer appears and although it's a bit early to say, the program seems to have returned to normal.

I agree with you; seems like a major bug in the program and just hope their engineers have found a solution.  It will take a few more weeks before I am ready to accept the problem has been solved, but so far at least I'm not getting the 'can't produce a database' message and being locked out by the program.

I was able to get it working again by moving contents of C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database elsewhere, then it would start after first generating an error.

The only problem with this is that it no longer remembers any of the past backups, though running the backup jobs now would create an incremental.   After successful backups for the existing scheduled jobs, I get an error "cannot find version <version #>.   What in the world is it asking for in this case anyway?

Acronis 2016 TIH build 6027, 7 Feb 2016 - "Cannot create database" message

Backed up a data partition D: to my backups partition E: on same physical drive

Copied the database to an external USB drive

Tried to mount it

Mount failed and an Acronis tools screen opened showing a path to the original backup locations and apparently offering to mount the drive

Mounting the backup from original location succeeded

Dismounted and tried mounting again the backup from the USB

It now fails with a message TreuImageTools, exe has stopped working

When I rebooted now I cannot start the program at all - it says Cannot create database

I attempted to follow Acronis posting for this error done on 24 Jan 2016 (above) at:

https://forum.acronis.com/forum/99525

Advice is to Stop services and renaming Database directory to databaseold and renaming scripts to scriptsold, restart services but now Acronis does not start at all.

This is the third time this "Cannot create a database" has arisen in couple of months.

Only solution is complete removal and re-install.

Till it happens again ....

Apparently Acronis want to charge me for support to fix for the non-working program

Acronis is pretty foolish in that it can detect the database error but can't automatically rebuild the data base or simply start the program and let the user proceed in the manner that he/she chooses.   My fix was simple. I went to

C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

and renamed the database files and the restarted Acronis 2016.  And Acronis started as if I had reinstalled the program.

Acronis found some of my existing backups but not all of them. The down side to this approach is that Acronis may not find your backups. Renaming files before trying this sort of fix is an old habit. I recognize that rolling the database files back to their original names would have been a worthless exercise because Acronis would not have started because the database error would have returned.

Thanks John,

I was having the same issue on two different machines and your solution worked for me.  It certainly is easier than removing the program and then using the clean utility and then reinstalling True Image.  I sure hope that they fix this issue soon.

Virgil

I have the same error and all I did was manually delete some TIB files. Obviously this still is not fixed. I have read a number of customers having like issues and here we are how many months into this issue and we have vague work arounds. I have used Acronis for years. I think that is very close to changing. A product that doesn't work is worthless when it comes to backing up your data and restoring data when needed. Very disappointing. I sure miss the past ATI versions that worked 5 years ago.

Well I looked in my daily system backups and extracted the folder,
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

from the latest backup and then copied it back into position, having renamed the old one.

Worked a treat. ATI 2016 now working as before.

Clearly a bug in ATI 2016, and given the number of people hitting it, I reckon Acronis should put some effort into fixing the bug and letting us know they are doing so.

Hello all,

This issue has very high priority, the fix will be released very soon (we await it in April).

Thank you,

I am running build 6571 on Windows 10 pc and still seeing this issue. Only way fix it is to reboot the PC. When I do, it TrueImage starts, but it loses all the backup file and I need to add the old backup files again.

Has this issue been resolved in the latest version? It does not look like it.

Thank you.

Yong Ra,

This sounds suspect of database corruption or a bad upgrade install.

I'd try this first:

01) Stop all Acronis services (control panel >>> administrative tools >>> right click services and "run as administrater")

02) Navigate to the following HIDDEN directory and rename the "Database" folder to "Database.old" or whatever you want:

                             C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

03) Start the Acronis services again.

04) Launch Acronis and then reconfigure the existing backup task (select the source and destination and verify options).  Then save the changes and by running the backup.

If that doesn't help, please consider a clean uninstall / reinsall to "freshen" things up:

01) Remove ATIH and any add-ons and Universal Restore from control panel

02) Run the ATIH cleanup tool in my signature.  Please be sure to note the warnings about removing secure zone first if you have it enabled.  Also note the registry keys to manually check after running the cleanup tool as well.  However, I have never had to make any registry changes, so it is probably not necessary to worry about.

03) Reboot (don't skip this).

04) After reboot, log back in and make sure these directories no longer exist... If they do, delete them and reboot again (don't skip the reboot if you manually delete these - the reboot updates the registry values)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis     C:\Program Files (x86)\Common\Acronis     C:\Program Files\Acronis     C:\Program Files\Common\Acronis     C:\ProgramData\Acronis  (this one is a hidden folder)

05) Reinstall ATIH 2016 v6027 by downloading from your online account (don't use a previous installer as it may be older or corrupt).

06) Once downloaded, run it by right clicking and using the "run as administrator" option to give it the highest privileges possible during install.

07) After install, launch ATIH and register your license key.  You will need to create new backup tasks again and should use unique names.  Your old backups can still be imported for recovery, or can be reocvered using the Acronis offline bootable recovery media.

Release 6571 working for me

About 3 weeks ago the Cannot Create Database message came up for me (again). It came up after seeking to view prior backups. But ... I installed (updated to) the new release 6571, rebooted, the database corrupt message went away and all started reasonably normally without having to do anything else. System seems stable now so far.

I had 6571 running and still having the same issue. I uninstall the program and reinstalled it. I am hoping it does not happen. Every time it happens, i lose all of the back up configuration and I have to reconfigure them. Thankfully, the backup files are still there.

I have installed the latest update and it appears that the problem has been resolved.  It is now several weeks and I have had no further problems.

Just to let you know - I never seen this before (using ATI for few years), but I got it today with ATI 2018 latest version..
