Clone 2 partitions on a single disk to 2 separate disks?

Thread needs solution

Hello

I have a Dell PC which has a single 2TB Segate HD split in to two partitions C and D. Is it possible to clone the disk partitions and separate them on to two disks? I have a new 256GB SSD and a new 2TB HD.

I'm in the process of cloning the whole disk 2TB to 2TB but near the end before I proceeded I found the exclude option.

Will the following work?

1. Clone the old disk and exclude the C:\ partition to the new 2TB HD

2. Clone the old disk and exclude the D:\ partition to the new 256GB SSD

3. Set SSD as primary boot

Any help is appreciated

Thanks.

Sohail,

I would not use Clone to achieve what you are wanting to do here.

I would make an entire disk backup of your 2TB Seagate HDD to an external disk drive, then restore the partitions needed to allow your C:\ drive to boot into Windows to your new 256GB SSD drive, then restore your D:\ partition to the new 2TB HDD separately.

Note: If you have Windows 7 or above then you will need to backup and restore more than just the C:\ partition as you will have other, hidden system partitions that need to be restored, this can include a System Reserved, UEFI and System Recovery partitions (though the latter isn't essential).

Doing this via backup & restore will mean that you will leave your original 2TB Seagate drive unchanged to allow you a means of getting back to a working system should anything go wrong.

The SSD drive should be connected in place of the existing boot 2TB drive so that all the boot configuration details remain correct for the restored OS partitions.

The Clone tool will only work on an entire disk.  It will not work for partitions only.  Steve's advise is the way to go here.  For the Exclusions you noted when you view the Exclusions tab at the top you will see a check box that is checked by default and then the list of exclusions.  If you uncheck that check box the exculsion list will be ignored.  If you wish to exclude items such as the pagefile swapfile, etc., then you select the ones you do not want excluded by clicking on them one at a time and clicking on the minus button shown at the bottom of the list.  This will remove items you do not wish to exclude from the exclusions list thus they will be included in the resulting backup.
