Cloning does not load from bootable media
I'm a newb so bear with me. I purchased a Crucial BX200 SSD and it came with the license for Acronis. However that did not work at all so I came to the Acronis website and bought a license for True Image 2016.
I'm trying to clone my existing drive to SSD and make it bootable. So if I understand the instructions I created a bootable disk with TI 2016, removed the HDD from my laptop, installed the SSD into my laptop, connected the original HDD to the laptop with a Rosewill caddy, then booted the laptop from the bootable disk.
It is at this point the laptop is supposed to boot to the Acronis program but all I get is a black screen with the Acronis logo and underneath is say "please wait, loading" or something like that. I waited and waited but the software does not load. The computer is "frozen". I even left it overnight hoping it would load but no. It still had the same Acronis logo the next morning. To get past this point I have to hold the power button down forcing computer shutdown.
Anyone else have this issue and what can I do to resolve the lockup? I've tried multiple times with no success. I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop, Windows 10.

Steve, thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the post and see what I can figure out. When I boot the computer from the CD it doesn't have any mention of an option between UEFI or Legacy. It looks like it defaulting to UEFI. This is the script onscreen
Starting UEFI Loader (x64)(v.1.1.42)...
Select an item by using the keyboard:
1. Acronis True Image 2016 (64-bit)
2. Acronis System Report (64-bit)
3. Continue booting
I've tried all of them. The first two just go to the Acronis logo with "Loading, please wait..." under the logo and that's it. I'm going to read the post and see if it addresses the issue.
Thanks again!

Scott,
There have also been a high number of reports that Crucial SSD'S are not recognized by the boot media. Since the boot media appears to hang this might be happening to you. To test if this is the case remove the Crucial drive and reattach your original drive then try to boot the machine using the boot media. If you can boot successfully then you have this same problem.
In this case I recommend that you return the Crucial drive as defective and purchase a different brand. From a price/performance standpoint the Samsung EVO'S are hard to beat.

Ok, I just tried that and I have the same issue. The laptop hangs up at the Acronis logo while booting from the boot media with my original drive installed in the laptop.
One other bit of information. I bought the SSD and it had a certificate for ATI 2015. When I used that it didn't work as I originally stated but I did install it on my desktop after it didn't work on the laptop just to see if it work there. It did work on my desktop, an old Dell Optiplex 745 I think...but of course I don't want the clone my desktop hard drive. Would this be an indication that it has a compatiblility issue with my laptop since the program will run from bootable media on my desktop but not on my laptop?

From what you have said thusfar I now suspect that your issue might be that your machine has Secure Boot enabled in the bios. Secure Boot works in concert with UEFI and is enabled by default in most cases. Consult your user manual or visit the manufacurer support site to determine how to disable the Secure Boot feature on your machine. Once disabled try to boot the media again. Be prepared though for your drive to possibly not be recognized if boot is successful.

Another reason the boot media may be hanging (defintiely make sure secure boot is disabled though), is how it is being booted. Acronis media can boot in UEFI or Legacy mode. If the OS was installed in Legacy mode, you should boot to the legacy mode of the bootable media. If your system OS was originally installed in UEFI mode, you should boot into the UEFI mode of the bootable media.
At this point, you probablty dont' know how the OS was installed, so try one and then the other using your onetime boot override key after reboot (usually F12 for Dells, others can be ESC, DEL, F1 or anything else really - consult your manual to find out if you're not sure).

Secure boot was enabled so I disabled it then I tried the UEFI mode from the bootable media and that yielded the same result, black screen with the Acronis logo with "Loading, please wait..." frozen on the screen. I rebooted and tried the Legacy mode and actually advanced to a blue screen to click on either Acronis True Image 2016, Acronis System Report, Acronis True Image 2016 (64 bit) or Acronis System Report (64 bit). I tried each one separately and each time the next screen was the same black screen with the Acronis logo and then no progress.
I've been back to the bios settings, changed to Legacy, tried all the boot scenarios I can think of. I am going to try to attach screenshots in the hope you might see something else that could be causing the hangup.

How long are you waiting when it goes to the black screen - it may just be slow on your sytem. It has to load everything into memory (ramdisk) - usually only takes a few minutes (at most), but on some older/slow hardware, i've seen it load after like 10 minutes!
What is your bootable media on - DVD/CD or USB flash drive. Perhaps try recreating the media again - just in case it was a bad burn.
If nothign else is working after that, you could try creating the WinPE bootable media instead - may have better driver compatibilty for your system. You shoudl first install the Windows 10.1 ADK (see my signature below) - don't use the one linked in the Acronis Application - it's older and known to have issues - hence the updated version of ADK supplied by Microsoft. Once the ADK is installed, just select the WinPE option and Acronis will build it for you automatically.

I created a WinPE bootable disk and performed the boot with it. The Acronis software loaded and I was able to clone my HDD to my new SSD. Everything seems to be working fine so far. Thanks for all your suggestions and help everyone!

Glad to hear you got it working.

Thanks! I'm pretty happy, this is actually the first time I've been able to resolve an issue with added hardware/software...couldn't have done it on my own for sure.

Reboot it may be you have selected the wrong options
read the option carefully before you want to select it
