Creating a dual boot from win 7 tib file and a win 8.1 tib file

Thread needs solution

Hi All

I have an HP laptop which came preloaded with Win 8.1. My old laptop has Win 7. I have used Acronis to create an image of the Win 8.1 from the new one and the Win 7 from the old.

Can I use these images to create a dual boot scenario. I have a program that will only work on a win 7 32bit install but I would be using the HP laptop for other functions as well and need the Win 8.1 64bit install.

I am very new to this so any help will be appreciated. I have very limited knowledge regarding this. Please advise what programs I would need as well as a guide if this is at all possible.

Regards

Derryn

Derryn, there are licensing issues with moving your Windows 7 OS from your old laptop to try to use this in a dual boot scenario on your new HP laptop.

There is a good chance that Windows 7 is an OEM licensed version, i.e. that came bundled with the old laptop and installed by the laptop maker, i.e. Dell or HP branded - the license for OEM versions of Windows are not transferable to other hardware.  You would need to either buy a new license to use it on the new laptop or have purchased a full Microsoft Retail version of Windows 7.

In most cases you should be able to get your program that you say will only work on your Windows 7 32-bit OS to work in Compatibility mode for Windows 7 when run on Windows 8.1.  32-bit programs will still run fine on a 64-bit OS but not the other way round.

I wouldn't recommend doing all the work to setup a dual boot Windows 8.1 and 7 environment if it is only for the sake of one program.  I would suggest looking for either an updated version of the program, or looking for an alternative program that will work on Windows 8 or above and do the same as you had the old program for.

If you still want to try to do this, then please read my post to another user in the forum at: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/118306#comment-357290
