Directory tree reference on clone

Thread needs solution

I'm going to replace an old HDD with SSD. I know I can clone the SDD from the present HDD and it will be bootable. When I install the SDD and clone it will the directory tree info still be correct? If the SDD is SATA and recognized by the bios wont it be called something  like E: rather than C: If so what happens to the references to the old C: drive files. I assume the SDD will have files marked C: something but it will now be E: I'm confused. I want the retain the old HDD just for storage and assume it will be called C: in the bios.

Your clone will be exactly the same as the original, to include the drive letter of C:

However be sure to remove the original drive and make sure the clone is connected where the original used to be before ever booting the system. You do not want to boot 2 drives that appear as the same one in the bios or you may cause yourself boot issues.

After cloning , you can boot Windows and then attach the other drive via USB, but only after the first one has booted into Windows first. Then, the second drive will always have a different drive letter when attached this way, but will be c: when directly being used to boot into Windows if you move it back to the original location and use it to boot into Windows first.

thanks the old drive is an IDE. I guess I can disconnect it after the cloning  or change its letter in disk management and then format it.  thanks again

Since you're going from IDE to a SATA disk, a clone won't be exactly the same in this case.  You may need to run Universal restore to make it bootable afterwards going from the IDE controller to a SATA controller.  The old KB articles, say this isn't necessary, but just in case...

Until you get the new SSD to boot, don't attach the old drive. Once booted, then you can attach and navigate or format as needed. You can also format with Acronis bootable media using the "add new disk" feature, or use a third party boot tool.  Just don't format until you know you have a good working clone (or a good backup image that has succesfully been restored and boots).

Good luck!

Ran the cloning process after installing the SDD. Acronis clone automatically changed the name of the old drive to the next letter and the
SDD to C:  everything is great.
