Disk Backups or Clone Image?

Thread needs solution

I just started using Acronis True Image 2016.  My plan is to utilize it to mainly do a full backup of my primary hard drive complete with OS (Windows 10) on a weekly basis.  The goal here is to utilize a more robust substitute for "Windows System Restore" (which I have had trouble with it's reliability and effectiveness lately on the Windows 10 platform).

That way, much like system restore, if I ever get in trouble I can simply restore back to the last known good weekly copy I made.

My question is this, is it better to setup a disk partition weekly schedule?  Or do a Clone Disk on an ad-hock basis.

Again, brand new to this as I always used the "Delivered windows tools for system imaging and system restore" and I want to utilize a more robust and better solution that I read Acronis delivers.  Thanks in advance.

Scott, welcome to these User Forums.

Doing a full backup of your primary hard drive that hosts your Windows 10 OS, all programs etc, is the recommended action that you should be performing on a regular schedule, plus ensuring that you have at least one or more such backups kept offline from your computer, so that these are not at risk from malware, ransomware etc.

You should also create and do a test dry run of the Acronis bootable Rescue Media so that you know that this will work for you in the event of needing to do a recovery, especially in the event of a disk failure where you need to do a bare-metal recovery.

The key difference between doing the regular, scheduled backup and doing a disk clone is that the former can be done while Windows is active, whereas all clones are done outside of Windows where the OS itself is involved.

Thank you so much for the welcome and sage advice Steve.

So, I am correct in assuming that keeping a weekly backup schedule of my primary drive which in turn would negate the need for the "Windows Restore Functionality" and a more preferable way to go?

And also thanks for the tip of testing out the bootable rescue media.

Scott, glad to be able to help with your questions.

Acronis backups can replace the Windows backup functions but there is always the option of keeping both, or at least having some Windows System Restore points that you could revert to should the need arise.  Belt & braces is a term not heard as much these days but basically advocates having more than one method of support to avoid being caught with your trousers down!

Very much appreciated Steve, I learned a lot to get me going.  Thanks again.
