Ever increasing backup size

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis True Image for several years but, recently, because of upgrading to Windows 10, I moved from Acronis 2013 to Acronis 2016 but am currently still running on WINDOWS 7, SP1.

Previously, all my backups (I do only FULL images) had run around 34 GB.  Since moving to ATI 2016, all my backups, at least as reported by ATI), seem to be 34GB Plus the size of the previous backup (i.e. 34 + 34 + 34 .......). Total size as reported by ATI is abou 100GB which is way, way bigger than my system file. My backup storage is on a USB 3.0 1TB Western Digital hard disk.

Am I misunderstanding something or is there a bug in ATI? ATI 2016 seems to behave as if it was doing a series of images but adding each one to the previous one like a kind of incremental backup.

By the way, I preferred the old (2013) initial display showing all the backups in chronological order and allowing separate actions (validate, delete, etc) upon each one.

Jerry, ATIH 2016 works differently than earlier versions in that it shows you the cumlutative size of your backup archive image files, hence what you are seeing is correct for this version of the product.

I am not sure of the rationale behind this change but I would guess it was intended to help users to understand just how much space each of their backup tasks were consuming on their backup drives, rather than having to display the files via Explorer then add up the total size that way.

There have been lots of posts complaining about the dumbing down of the Acronis GUI in the last two versions and I can only suggest that you use the Feedback tool (in Help) to make your own comments known to Acronis about the changes as compared with your experience in using the 2013 version.

If that's the case (and, I'm not questioning what you say), how does one select a specific backup for recovery or deletion?

I just checked the backup storage and, in fact, there are separate backup files for the last two backups.  As in my previous post, I still don't know how to select them from the within Acronis.

Jerry, see Recovering partitions and disks in the ATIH 2016 User Guide, where you will see an image in step 4 and in the top right you will see a drop-down selection list where you choose which backup version by date & time.

  1. Start Acronis True Image.
  2. If you want to recover your data from Acronis Cloud, make sure that you are signed in to your Acronis account.
  3. In the Backup section, select the backup which contains the partitions or disks you want to recover, and then clickRecover disks.
  4. In the Backup version list, select the backup version you want to recover by its backup date and time.

Thanks very much Steve! I am not yet as familiar with user's guide as I was with ATIH 2013. As we used to say in software development 'When all else fails, read the manual'.
