Failed to activate restore program after updating to win10 RS1

Thread needs solution

Hi guys, I'm new here and I really need some help.

I've updated my win10 into the RS1 version this morning, I made a new backup file and try to restore it to see whether it can work well in the new OS. Well, sadly, when the program went to the step of restarting computer, the system showed that the boot device is incorrect, please choose the correct boot device and fail to run the restore program.

I installed the OS in UEFI+GPT mode,in the earlier version of win10(x64 pro), when I did the same thing, the restore program can be successfully activated after restarting computer. Though there was still some problem at that time, the system could only be started by "windows boot manager", if I chose "hard disk" as the primary boot device, the system would show the same hint that I mentioned before, every time when I restored the system by acronis 2016, I had to changed boot device into "windows boot manager manually", otherwise I can startup my system. As I updated the OS into RS1 version, even the restore program is failed to activate, every time I restart my computer the "incorrect device" hint will show up, what is more, in some case I can't even start up the acronis in win10 which never happened in the earlier version of win10.

My mainboard is Asus ROG Maximus VIII Ranger, the SSD is Samsung 950 Pro. I wonder whether it is due to the incompatibility between acronis 2016 and the win10 RS1 or there was sth wrong when I installed OS before?

Thanks for reading it patiently, eagerly expecting some help:)

updating

I tried to format the system disk and completely reinstall the current version of win10. The restart function could work at the first moment, but when i recovered system by loading the image file of RS1 which was made after updated from win10 10586, the same problem happened again.

For those which reinstalled RS1 and acronis, everything works well, acronis can easily recover the newly copied image in RS1, but when it goes to the image from the "updating mode”, the restart function would corrupt which lead to the faliure of activating the restore program:(

Edward, welcome to these user forums.

It sounds to me like you are trying to do the restore of your Acronis backup image from within Windows, which then needs to restart the computer and change the EFI boot loader to enable a default Linux OS environment that Acronis uses to perform the restore.

Whilst Acronis provides this as an option, the MVP's in the forum would not recommend using this method as too many users have found problems where if anything goes wrong, the bootloader can get damaged and the system rendered unbootable without resorting to Windows recovery media to do a startup repair.

The recommended method when doing a restore is to use the latest build Acronis bootable Rescue Media where this is started in the same boot mode as your Windows OS, i.e. using the EFI bootloader.  This is safer than letting Acronis change the bootloader as it does not make any changes to the boot configuration at all.

Agree with Steve. Also, what is the boot priority in the bios.  If you have the option to move "Windows boot manager" to the top, that's where it needs to be.  I have a Gigabyte Z170X gaming 3 and if that is not the first priority, Windows never boots on this board.  I cannot pick a specific disk and make it the priority like I could on my previous motherboards - always have to have "Windows boot manager" listed in the top slot or I end up with a generic win 10 BSOD that makes it see like the problem is a driver or something else, but it's really just this one little change that makes all the difference.

Wow, thank you.

So the better way is to make a bootable rescue media, when I want to restore the system, what should I do is to put the bootable media I made before, and then start up the  computer and let the acronis be activated by this bootable media instead of using it under windows OS? That helps a lot, I will try it later.

BTW,  I used to make backup image in Windows OS, is it better to do it in the Linux OS or there are no differences?

Thank you again:)

Thanks for replying, Bobbo.

The default boot priority in the bios is "Windows boot manager”,“HDD”, "DVD-ROM”. It worked well in the earlier version of win10, but when I updated the OS to RS1, there was some problems in restarting computer from win10 OS, I will always receive the hint about "wrong boot device" or sth like it, seems like the boot priority has been automatically changed when I restart computer, I can only enter the OS by pressing "ctrl+alt+del” to restart the computer again in this condition.

I guess maybe there's sth wrong between the motherboards bios and RS1 when I chose to "update" the system from 10586 to RS1, as another computer of mine with Gigabyte B75M works perfect in RS1(Totally reinstalled, also with the mode of UEFI+GPT). I intend to contact Asus custom service to make sure.

Thanks for your help again:)

Updating

I have updated the bios to the latest version, a little bit risky but it works.

The reboot function still works after I updated the OS from 10586 to RS1, as I will still choose the recommended way to restore OS to prevent unexpected troubles in the future.

Thanks,folks.

Problem solved.
