Failed to Open

Thread needs solution

I have backups on two extrernal drives. When I try to recover a second-recent one (backup 6) the message is "Failed to Open" Trying "Browse" just looks for backup 4 ... 3...2..." I've tried to add the most recent back-up from the original location and from a copied location but as soon as I press recover  it replies "Failed to open "  - the one it originally "failed".

I have reinstalled but this hasn't made any difference. Help much appreciated as I need to restore the working version of Win 10 (the one where the Start Menu did work)

I had this problem of the Start Menu not working in Win 10 and instead of restoring a backup to fix it I performed an in place upgrade to Windows 10 using the Windows 10 installer.  Fixed the problem perfectly.

Download the Windows 10 Media Creation tool from the link below:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Create the media, USB thumb drive is the handiest.  Once created use Windows Explorer to view the contents.  You will see a Setup.exe file, right click on that an select Run as Administrator.

Now, follow the instructions in the link below to perform the upgrade:

Problem solved.

Thank you for your reply. I will try your solution if necessary. However if I have a backup which will solve my problem I should be able to use it without having to go through any other hoops. Why can I not use/restore the backup I have? It seems to me that TI is useless if I cannot resore a backup! Cheers Jay

How are you trying to recover your backup?

Are you trying to do so from within the Acronis GUI in Windows, and if so, does the external backup drive have the same drive letter allocated to it as you configured the ATIH backup task to write you when you made the backup?

If the drive letter(s) have changed then there will be a mismatch between the backup information in the Acronis database and the present location of the backup files.

I would recommend using the offline Acronis bootable rescue media to perform this type of recovery.

Boot from the standard linux based rescue media (on DVD or USB stick) and check that you can see both your internal and external disk drives.

Further check that you can then browse to the backup you want to recover from and that you can validate the backup.

Note: If you are restoring from an incremental backup, then all the incremental images for the complete version chain must be present and correct in order to restore successfully (and to validate).

Please ensure that you are using the latest build 6569 rescue media - create this if you don't have it or download the ISO image file from your Acronis Account and burn it to DVD as needed.  This will offer you the greatest range of supported disk drives and technologies for your computer hardware.

My suggestion for performing an in place upgrade is because you may have other issues with OS system files that would be fixed in the process.  These same issues might also be contained in any backup archives you have which you might recover thus, the issue of the start menu not responding could resurface.
