Hard drive cloning

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have a 3tb HDD that is starting to fail.

I do have Acronis True Image 2016, so the question is, if I buy a 4tb SSHD drive, can I clone the HDD to the SSHD?   Is this done while the operating system is running, or do I have to use a separate disk to boot off of and do the clone?

I would really hate to have to rebuild my system and would just rather clone it if possible.

Any hints, tricks, etc, please let me know.

Thank you

Rob

Rob,

My personal recommendation is to perform a "Disk" mode backup of the current HDD.  This is done by selecting Disk & Partition, then selecting full partition list.  See picture below.  You would need another disk, big enough to hold the backup.

You would need to create rescue media (USB or DVD), if you haven't done so already.  Then, after the SSHD arrives, install it in your computer, boot from rescue media, then perform a restore from the backup to the SSHD.

Rob,

A clone of the drive, given it is a data drive I assume, is actually doable from within the Windows installed application, does not require a reboot of the machine into the default Linux environment to perform the clone, and is in fact in my opinion the one time that the clone tool in the Windows installed app can be used and used well.

I would advise however that you investigate the SSHD you intend to use as a replacement as some of those drives do not play well as secondary drives.  They are primarily designed as OS Primary System drives, in other words to host operating systems, and can be problematic as secondary drives.

As example I have a 1TB Seagate SSHD I pulled from a laptop with the intent to use that drive as a secondary drive.  This drive would stay discoverable by Windows as a secondary drive meaning that I could set the drive up in Windows using Disk Management and upon the next reboot the drive would be absent from the system and would not appear in Windows in any manner.  Upon some research I found that Seagate does not recommend use of SSHD drives as secondary drives as they are designed for Primary drive purposes.
