Large file recovery ultra slow and never ending...

Thread needs solution

Hi, 

I have tried to recover a large file (60GB) from a disk backup and after 48 hours it had recovered only 45 GB and showing 11 hours remaining, I have tried twice with the same behaviour. It starts fast for the first 20 GBs or so and then it slows to a crawl, restoring only a few KBs per second. I really need my file back (it's a VirtualBox disk file).

Can anyone help?

Hello Francesco,

Where is your disk backup stored that you are trying to recover?
If it is on a network drive or an USB 2 drive then the performance of the recovery will be dependent on the data transfer rates that those devices can achieve, plus on the location where you are recovering to?

My backup is stored on a 2GB USB3 disk which typically has a read speed of 100MB/s+. The destination is an M.2 ssd last generation which is very very fast. The strange thing is that the first 20GB are recovered very fast but after that the restore slows drammatically making the recovery process impossible.

I have already open a ticket with Acroni support, but so far no reply.

Any other ideas???

Francesco, is the SSD an internal drive?  Do you have any other internal drives that you could try copying the backup image to from your USB drive?  I assume that you mis-typed the size of the USB drive when you said it was 2GB - should this be 2TB perhaps given that you restore the first 20GB quickly?

Another option here would be to use the Acronis bootable recovery / rescue media and try the recovery outside of Windows in a dedicated environment.

yes I meant 2 TB. I have tried to restore to one other internal SSD Drive with the same results. I will try the rescue media option.

It would be nice to have an official reply from Acronis... I am really disappointed.

I would suggest that you make sure your USB 3.0 drivers are up to date.  Check your manufacturer support site for the latest versions.  You should also check your 2TB drive manufacturer support site for possible firmware updates for your drive, often these drives have had such updates issued to help resolve such issues.

For what it's worth, we use Acronis at work on a variety of Dells using m.2 sata internal drives and restore full blown OS images (usually about 70Gb once restored), with no issues (that I'm aware of).  At home, I use an PCIE NVME drive and backup and restore from it with no noticeable slowdown.  Perhaps in this case, it is a unique issue based upon the specific hardware - I have no way of confirming or really helping you isolate it unless you can try a different m.2 sata drive in the same slot and see if the behavior repeats.  

What happens if you restore to say another USB disk - how's the speed there? 

I can tell you that not all disks are created equal either (what is yours - model, brand and size, by the way?).  For instance, I have a 64Gb silicon USB 3.0 flash drive that reports 100Mb read and 80Mb write.  When copying a 4.7Gb .iso to it, it's pretty close to advertised speeds.  However, when I copy 3Gb of portable apps directotires to it, it is the slowest drive I have ever seen (slower than my old 2.0 San Disk cheapos)... this drive crawls at Kb, not even Mb with small files and numerous folders being copied to it.  

Is your large VM file, actually one VM file you're restoring, or are you restoring the content in that VM file directly?  

I would also suggest trying a different USB 3.0 port if available.  If your machine is a desktop try one on the back I/O panel, they ususally work better.

I eventually restored the file by "mounting" the tib file on Windows and copying the file from mounted image without actually changing drivers, ports or anything else. This though is only a partial solution because my backup is incremental and by trial and error I discovered that only full backups can be mounted as images? So I restored a version of the file from February, not ideal but better than nothing.

Following this very bad experience I am switching all my backups to single version scheme and then keeping versions myself, I don't trust Acronis incremental backup anymore.
