Nonstop Backup
Having struggled for some time with NSB, which has a tendency to stop for no apparent reason, I decided to invest in an extra USB3 disk. I have been trying to do NSB onto a 1TB disk from another 1TB with 5/600GB data. When it works, it finally fills up the disk and then I have to start all over. This means throwing away the 'old-verions' aspect of NSB, i.e. the ability to retrieve an older version of a current file. This is something I want to be able to do, just as I do with Time Machine on my wife's iMac.
Maybe I have misunderstood the way to use NSB, since there seems to be no way to tell the NSB how to dynamically delete files acccording to some strategy - 'oldest first' would be the obvious strategy.
In waiting for a solution, I have put my hand in my pocket to buy a 2TB to back up my 5/600GB and thus have bought some time before I have to have a long-term solution.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hello SeptimusFry,
Nonstop backup indeed consumes as much disk space as it can, but when there is no more free space, Nonstop backup is supposed to overwrite its oldest recovery points with new backups automatically. This does not result in releasing disk space, your disk will always look like filled.
The issue with Nonstop backup pausing on its own can be provoked by several factors and we do not have a 'fix' to address all of them at the moment.
If 1-hour interval between backups is acceptable for you, you can delete Nonstop backup and create a regular backup instead. Combination of "daily - every hour" schedule option and automatic cleanup from "Backup scheme" tab will allow you to run regular backups without the need of manual cleanup of backups.

Slava

Hi SeptimusFry,
I have been struggling for the past week to get NSB to work. I am currently evaluating the trial version. It suddenly just stops for no reason. Each morning, when I wake up my computer, the NSB starts itself up again but just suddenly stops without saving anything. Funny thing, the log indicates it was successful.
From your comments you seem to indicate that you have, somehow, been able to keep it going until it fills the disk. How did you do that? The longest I have been able to get it to go is a day and a half. And are you also saying that it does not really keep going when it fills the disk?
I have had two different tech support people trying to help me to get it going. They did not appear to know anything about the stopping problems. Now, I find out from Slava's comments, that they know about them and just don't have a fix. Well, I am currently running incrementals along with the NSB and will make up my mind about buying the product in about three weeks.
