Recovery - Failed to Open Backup...

Thread needs solution

I purchased True Image to transfer a Microsoft Surface book with a defective screen to a replacement unit (identical hardware, so should be able to restore disk image without issue), but have been unable to complete this task. I've successfully backed the original unit up to two different hard disks (to rule out a bad disk) with multiple attempts on each (to rule out a bad backup), but every attempt to recover to the new unit yields the same error message:

Failed to open backup <File Directory/Name> Make sure the backup location is accessible and contains all versions of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.

I've also validated each backup on the new machine before attempting restore. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Chase, how are you doing the restore of your backup image to the new Microsoft Surface book?

From what you have said, it sounds like you have made several backup images to two different external hard disks from the first MS Surface book and have validated these successfully.  I assume that both the backup and validation tasks were run from within Windows running on the Surface book?

If you are starting the restore operation on the second Surface book from within Windows, then you can at that point 'see' the backup image on the external disk drive, but to complete the restore, Acronis will need to restart the computer, so I presume that it is at this point that you are then getting the error message that the backup location is not accessible?

The most common cause for this type of issue is simply that the Acronis standard boot media is unable to recognise either the internal or external disk drive for the restore operation.  The standard boot media is based on a Linux recovery environment and may not have the required device drivers needed for your disk drives.

The alternative method of restoring in such a situation is to create the Acronis Windows PE Rescue Media and boot the MS Surface book from that media - this can be created on CD or on USB stick as appropriate to your boot capabilities.

The Windows PE Rescue media uses the MS Windows ADK which may contain the required device drivers you need, if not, then you would need to add any additional drivers as described in the following forum post:

Steve is correct - WinPE offline bootable recovery media will be needed for the Surface Pro's which use the newer PCIE NVME hard drives as driver support is not yet in the Linux default bootable media (although that should/might change with this months anticipated 2016 update - we'll see when it comes out).  Don't forget to disable secure boot on the Surface Pro as well so that it will allow the USB to boot and be sure that it only boots in UEFI mode (not legacy/CSM) which is a black background with white text only at the initial Acronis menu.
