Restore

Thread needs solution

I have many backups on a Passport  "D" drive.  Also Bootable Rescue is on DVD "E" drive.  A W10 update has taken the "D" position as a partition of "C".  I place Restore DVD in in the first USB port (formerly D now E.  Plug Passport in second USB, I suppose it is now F. I power up the Laptop{Dell XPS 12) and it boots to W10.  Shutdown Laptop and press F11 repeatedly while booting. Choose USB to boot. Seems to boot ok, but I never get to a point where it wants to do a restore. My procedure is surely wrong, but I have tried many combinations and can't get it to restore. Please straighten me out.

Gearhard, welcome to these User Forums.

If you are booting from the Acronis bootable Rescue Media, then the letter assigned to the DVD drive or Passport drive within Windows does not matter, as any letters would be assigned by the boot OS used on the DVD (or USB stick).

Windows drive letters only apply when Windows is booted to its own desktop environment.

Windows 10 updates should not cause your drive letters to be changed, so if you are seeing a Windows Recovery partition being given a drive letter, you can use Windows Disk Management to remove that drive letter, as that Recovery partition should always be hidden.

When you want to boot from the Acronis Rescue Media (DVD), then you need to ensure that Windows Fast Start does not get involved as that will just put your laptop in a Hybrid Sleep state (aka hibernation) when you do a Shutdown - you can force a full shutdown by holding the Shift key when clicking on shutdown, or else do a Restart then try pressing the F12 boot menu options key to select the DVD for the rescue media.
