TI 2106 vn 19.0.0.6569 NVME Problems

Thread needs solution

I have just upgraded to vn 19.0.0.6569 of TI 2016 as it is supposed to support NVME.

I have created a PE version Rescue Media on a USB stick. This boots OK.

I have a Samsung SM9551 256GbSSD with a dual boot system - Windows 10 and Windows 7.

I booted the Rescue USB and told it to create an Image of my entire SM951 256Gb SSD which contains -

Recovery Ptn. (450mb), EFI (100mb), Windows 10 (117Gb) and Windows 7 (121 Gb). I worked through the sequence, giving the image a name and target.

When it got to the 'Operation Progress' window it just stuck there. I waited quite a time but it just did not show any progress.

I also tried imaging just a SINGLE Partition, with the same result.

I did manage to create and restore partitions using an earlier version of TI2016 (with SM951 Drivers incorporated) and this worked to some extent. I tried to use vn 6569 to restore an earlier Win 7 image and it stuck at 'Analyzing Partition I' for ever!! (I is the temporary name for the Win 7 partition on the SSD).

Hello Clive, thank you for your comprehensive description of your system and the problem you have encountered with the latest build 6569 version.

I can only offer two suggestions to you at this point.

  1. Use the Feedback Tool in the ATIH 2016 GUI Help section to report this issue directly to the Acronis Developers, including a System Report from the system you have described in your post.  This will allow the developers to look into this issue in more detail.
  2. Create or download the latest Linux based build 6569 rescue media and test the same operations with that either on DVD or your USB memory rescue media.

Please note that we have had several users recently in the forums who have had similar problems which were identified as being caused by bad USB memory stick media from such as Verbatim.  Also see the sticky post in the forum with the warning about not using USB memory sticks greater than 32GB in size.

I'd try different media as well - perhaps an entirely differnt USB drive (and manufacturer, just in case).

Others have been able to get their existing USB drives to work again, but only after using dikspart /clean (drive letter) first.  Then going into computer managment and initializing it in Windows.  Then going back in and formatting it with something like fat32format.exe to then reformat the drive again.  The idea of going though this is to make sure no hidden partitions exist on the drive that may have been created by another tool or application.  Windows can only see one partition on removable disks, but other Linux based applications or tools can create additional bootloaders and/or partitions on the drive that can cause issues.

Even then, I suspect this could be something else since you can actually boot the media but then the backup is stuck.  In most cases, it is usually either a dirty bad source or destination disk.  I would run "chkdsk /f /r" on both disks and then try again as well.  Yes, I'm sure that your 951 is new and pristine, but doesn't mean something isn't wrong with it - I bought a couple of 850 EVO's that went out after less than 2 months (we use a lot of these and it's not very common, but can be possible).

Unfortunately, I'm away from my main PC for another week and haven't been able to test v6569 backup on my 950Pro, so perhpas someone else with a 950 and/or 951 can chime in to say that it is either working or not working for them too.

Just managed to return to this Topic. Thanks for the comments. I will look into them and report back.

Just got back to this. My comments are -

The Recovery USB I created with an earlier TI2016 (probably version 5634 November 2015 and to which I added drivers for my SM951 SSD) runs OK and makes and restores images of Windows 7 and 10 to/from the SM951 SSD.

The reason I decided to upgrade to TI2016 19.0.0.6569 was because I was experiencing some erratic behaviour with the above USB version.

Research online indiated that the new release of TI had full support for nvme SSD's. I therefore upgraded TI to 6569 and created a PE rescue USB. This runs correctly until it gets to the 'Operation Progress', where it sticksk.

I will look at the Linux based 6569 Rescue media and report back.

I don't see the relevance of the comments about diskpart or clean D: as I used new USB's and they load without problem. I have several SM951's which the older Rescue USB works with well.

If you reuse a USB thumb drive to create the Linux based version of True Image then formatting is necessary because the Media Builder installer will only format a drive with the minimum amount of space required for OS and application and will leave the rest as unallocated space.  This results in a non-bootable drive.

Using a new USB thumb drive will not have this issue.
