Unable to create backup-error message "unable to create volume snapshot"

Thread needs solution

Running windows 10 Pro. Had this problem with 2015, decided to try 2016 since it supported windows 10.

Same problem. Cannot do a backup. Have sent attached file info to support and have never heard back.  Been running a version of Acronis for 10 years.  This is getting frustrated.

Have set VSS on automatic as well as the microsoft shadow copy provider.

Roger, VSS could actually be the issue.  As a test, try disabling VSS temporarily and see if Acronis can fall back to it's own local Snapapi backup method (the one used outside of Windows for offline backups)

Ultimately, if it's a VSS issue you'll have to do some troubleshooting on your own system. I have had trouble with VSS after ugprading to Windows 10 - even down the road after a fresh upgrade of Windows 10 (not just with Acronis, but with errors in the MS system logs - you may want to check there for error codes to research too).

3 Ways to disable VSS temporarily or for specific backup tasks in Acronis

There a bunch of online forums and tutorials about trying to identify and/or repair VSS issues in Windows 10 (google search: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=windows+10+vss+error

I rarely post links to other applications (especially competing ones), but am doing so here, not because of the product, but because it shows a good reference of how to check your machine and/or attempt to resolve local system Microsoft VSS errors.  It also points out that VSS is completely a Windows utility built into the OS that this other product also leverages for backups taken while Windows is running and I think that helps explain that the Windows service needs to be functioning correctly in order to utilize it, regardless of the backup product being used while Windows is running.

I am NOT recommending this alternative product as a solution or work-a-round.  As you can see, it too also has this limitation if VSS is not functioning properly on a system, and in this regards, Acronis also has a solution of its own.  By disabling VSS and utilizing its own propriertay SNAPAPI backup method instead if VSS, you can still take backups while Windows is running.  The limitation of SNAPAPI vs VSS, is that VSS is the only method which is reliable for backing up online/active ORACLE and/or SQL databases (which most home users probably don't use, but should be pointed out)

Used method one and it worked. Trying to figure out method three so that don't have to do this for all backup jobs.
